Consideración
The story of transformation follows Jesus’ question to the disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” and the first announcement of his suffering. Although the apostles have been travelling with Jesus for some time, they do not yet have intimate knowledge of his person. With him, they go up the mountain. In the mindset of tradition, the mountain was the pre-eminent place where God dwelt. The way there was life itself. On that road, the first disciples received a vision that made it inescapably clear that Jesus had been sent to go before them as a new Moses and Elijah to the end of the world. It was misguided to build tents and dwell on that particular experience. On the contrary, from there the work would really begin. Also for us who have come this far.
FIRST READING Dan. 7, 9-10,13-14
His garment was white as snow.
From the prophet Daniel
In my vision I saw that there were thrones set up
and a very old man was sitting on them.
His robe was white as snow
and the hair of his head was white like wool.
His throne was made of flames,
his wheels of blazing fire.
A stream of fire gushed forth and flowed before Him.
And flowed before Him.
A thousand times a thousand served Him
and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him.
The court was seated
and the books were opened.
In my night vision I saw through the clouds of heaven
someone approaching who looked like a human being.
He approached the old man and was led before Him.
Then He was given dominion
glory and royal power;
all nations, tribes and tongues paid homage to Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
that never perishes,
His kingdom never perishes.
INTERLUDIUM Psalm 97(96), 1-2, 5-6, 9
The Lord is king:
All the earth is under His power.
The Lord is king, let the earth rejoice,
the lands around the sea rejoice.
Dark clouds form his bodyguard,
Law and justice hold his throne high.
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
the ruler of all the world.
The heavens proclaim his holiness
And all nations behold his glory.
The whole earth is under your power,
You are the highest of gods.
SECOND READING 2 Peter 1:16-19
We ourselves have heard this voice from heaven.
From the apostle Peter’s second letter
When we proclaim to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
we do not rely on cleverly devised myths ,
but we speak as eyewitnesses of His glory.
For He received honour and glorification from God the Father,
when the exalted Majesty spoke this word to Him:
“This is My beloved Son
in whom I am well pleased.
And this voice we ourselves heard sounding from heaven
when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
This gave us
even more authority to the word of the prophets.

in whom I am well pleased;

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark
In those days
Jesus took Peter, James and John with him
and led them to the top of a high mountain
where they were all alone.
He changed before their eyes:
his garment became bright
and as white as could be.
Elijah appeared to them, along with Moses, and they spoke to Jesus.
And they spoke to Jesus.
Peter took the floor and said to Jesus
‘Rabbi, it is good for us to be here.
‘Let’s build three tents,
one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah’.
He didn’t quite know what he was saying,
for they were all completely amazed.
A cloud came over them
and out of that cloud came a voice:
‘This is my Son,
the Beloved,
listen to him.
When they looked around ,
they suddenly saw none other than Jesus.
When they came down the mountain
Jesus forbade them to tell anyone
what they had seen,
before the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
In fact, they kept it to themselves,
even though they wondered among themselves
what the resurrection from the dead could mean.
