Consideration
Essential to the Christian faith is that it is possible for human beings to be in a personal relationship with God, through the person of Jesus Christ. He is central. This is what Peter confesses today, together with us: Jesus is not just another prophet among many others, He is the Messiah, the saviour of mankind and the Son of God. This confession is so grand that it cannot come from Peter himself. The testimony comes from God’s revelation. Who is Jesus Christ at the deepest level for me?
FIRST READING Jer. 31:31-34
A time is coming when I will make a new covenant .
And think no more of their sins.
From the Prophet Jeremia
Thus speaks the Lord :
‘A time is coming
that I will make a new covenant with Israel and Judah ;
not a covenant as I made with their forefathers ,
when I took them by the hand
To lead them out of Egypt.
‘For this covenant they broke ,
though I was their master.
-so reads the Lord’s word of God.
This is the new covenant
which I will make with Israel in the future:
I write My law in their innermost being; I engraft it in their hearts,
‘I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
‘Then no one will have to keep another:
Get to know the Lord.
‘For everyone-large and small- already knows Me
– reads the Lord’s word of God -.
I forgive their transgressions,
I think no more of their sins.
Interludium Ps. 51(50), 12-13, 14-15, 18-19
Create in me a pure heart, my God.
Create in me a pure heart, my God,
Give me a resolute spirit again.
Will not cast me away from your Face,
do not take away your Holy Spirit from me.
Give me again the opulence of your blessing,
make me strong in generosity.
Then I will teach the erring your ways,
lead all the guilty back to Thee.
In gifts Thou hast no pleasure,
whatever I offer Thee, Thou wilt not.
What I offer, God, is my penitence,
a crushed and humiliated heart Thou dost not reject.
ALLELUIA cf. Acts 16, 14b
Alleluia.
Make our hearts receptive, Lord,
and that we turn to the word of thy Son.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mt 16:13-23
Thou art Peter ;
I will give thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew
When Jesus had come to the region of Caesarea from Philip
He asked His disciples this question :
“Who is
according to the opinion of men ,
the Son of Man?”
They replied:
“Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
‘But you – spoke He to them – who do you say that I am?’
Simon Peter replied :
“Thou art the Christ ,
the Son of the living God.”
Jesus resumed :
“Blessed art thou Simon, son of Jonah ,
for not flesh and blood have revealed this to thee
but my Father who is in heaven.
“In my turn I say to you :
“Thou art Peter ;
and on this rock I will build my Church
and the gates of hell shall not overwhelm her.
“I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven
And what ye shall bind on earth ,
shall also be bound in heaven
and what ye shall dissolve on earth
shall also be dissolved in heaven”
Thereupon He emphatically forbade His disciples
saying to anyone, that He was the Christ.
From that moment, Jesus began to make it clear to His disciples
that He had to go to Jerusalem ;
That there He would have to suffer much from the elders,
the high priests and the scribes,
but that after being put to death
He would rise on the third day.
Then Peter took Jesus aside
and began to entertain Him earnestly about it :
“That forbids God, Lord!
‘Such a thing must never happen to You!’
But Jesus turned and said to Peter :
“Go away Satan, back !
“Thou art an offence to Me ,
for thou art guided by human considerations
and not by what God wills.”
