Invitation
May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day
Opening word
In the Lord’s Prayer, we pray for ‘daily bread’.
We ask God to satisfy our hunger
and pray that He gives us the bread to live on.
Jesus himself is the bread for life.
He satisfies our deepest hunger and gives us life in abundance.
If we listen to His Word and do what He says,
we receive eternal life.
Let us then seek our salvation with the Lord
and open our hearts to his mercy.
FIRST READING 1 Kings 19, 4-8
Strengthened by food, he walked up to the mountain of God.
From the first book of Kings
In those days, after a day’s journey in the desert, Elijah came
by a gorse bush.
He sat down under it.
He longed to die and said:
‘It is becoming too much for me, Lord;
let me die for I am no better than my fathers.’
Thereupon he lay down under the gorse bush and slept.
But suddenly an angel nudged him and said to him:
‘Rise and eat.’
He looked up
and there at his headboard he saw
a cake, baked on glowing stones,
and a jug of water.
He ate and drank
and laid himself to rest again.
But again, for the second time,
the angel of the Lord nudged him and said:
‘Get up and eat ;
otherwise the journey will exceed your strength.’
Then Elijah got up, ate and drank
and, strengthened by the food, he walked for forty days and nights
until he reached the mountain of God, the Horeb.
Responsorial Ps 34(33), 2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
Refrain
Taste and notice how mild the Lord is.
The Lord I will praise every day,
His praise is always on my lips.
My spirit is proud of the Lord’s favour,
let every one who hears it rejoice.
Glorify the Lord together with me
And let us worship His Name in unison.
I went to the Lord and He heard me,
He saved me from all that I feared.
Look up to Him and your face will shine
And thou shalt not blush for shame.
Who cry out in distress, to them the Lord listens
and rescues them from their misery.
The angel of God puts a bulwark around them,
to protect every one who fears God.
Taste and notice how mild the Lord is,
happy the man who seeks salvation from Him.
SECOND READING Eph. 4:30-5:2
Lead a life of love after the example of Christ.
From the holy apostle Paul’s letter to the Christians of
Ephesus
Brothers and sisters,
Wilt not grieve God’s Holy Spirit;
ye are certified with his seal
for the day of salvation.
Resentment, wrath, wrath, crying and cursing ,
in short, all wickedness must disappear from you.
Be good to one another and cordial.
Forgive one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.
Be imitators of God
as befits beloved children.
Lead a life of love after the example of Christ,
who loved us and gave himself up for us
as sacrifice and victim,
God to a sweet smell.
Verse for the Gospel John 6:51-52
Alleluia.
I am the living bread
Who came down from heaven.
If anyone eats of this bread ,
he will live forever.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL John , 41-51
I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John
In those days the Jews were murmuring about Jesus,
because He had said:
‘I am the bread that came down from heaven’,
and they said:
‘Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph ,
and do we not know his father and mother?
‘Then how can He say:
I have come down from heaven?’
But Jesus spoke to them:
‘Mort yet not among yourselves.
‘No one can come to Me
If the Father who sent Me does not draw him;
And I will raise him up at the last day.
‘It is written by the prophets :
And all shall be taught by God.
‘All who have listened to the Father’s teaching ,
will come to Me.
‘Not that anyone has seen the Father :
only he who is of God has seen the Father.
‘Verily, verily, I say unto you:
Whoever believes has eternal life.
‘I am the bread that gives life.
‘Your fathers who ate the manna in the desert ,
died nevertheless;
but this bread comes down from heaven
That whoever eats of it may not die.
‘I am the living bread
which came down from heaven.
‘If anyone eats of this bread ,
he shall live forever.
‘The bread that I will give ,
is My flesh,
for the sake of the life of the world.’

POPE FRANCIS
On brotherhood and social friendship
2. This saint of fraternal love, of simplicity and joy,
who inspired me to write the encyclical Laudato si’,
now motivates me once again to dedicate this new encyclical to
brotherhood and social friendship. St Francis, who declared himself a
friend of the sun, the sea and the wind, after all, knew himself even more
connected with those who were of the same flesh as him. Everywhere he sowed
peace and accompanied the poor, the abandoned, the sick, the
outcasts, the least of these.
