Jesus’ words about fidelity and the indissolubility of marriage may come across as harsh. But they are not meant that way. He wants to give a positive and hopeful message. God is at the origin of every loving relationship. In Him it finds its origin. God is there from the beginning. Because God is so faithful to His love for people, no man can separate the unity between people. Therefore, in their faithful love, spouses are a picture of God’s covenant with humanity.
FIRST READING Ez 16:59-63
I will remind you of the covenant and you will be ashamed.
From the prophet Ezekiel
Thus says the Lord God:
“I will do to you as you have done to me
you who have so despised the oath
that you have broken the covenant.
“Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in your youth.

“I will make an everlasting covenant with you.
“Then you will remember your behaviour and be ashamed,
“when I shall have your sisters, the eldest and the youngest,

In those days the Pharisees came to Jesus
to test him with the question:
“Is a man free
to disown his wife for any reason?”
He answered them.
“Have you not read that the Creator
in the beginning made man and woman
and said:
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother
to unite himself with his wife
and the two shall become one flesh.
“Therefore they are no longer two
they have become one flesh.
“Therefore what God has joined together
cannot separate man.
They said to him:
“Then why did Moses prescribe
that when you dismiss a woman
give a letter of divorce?”
He replied :
“Because of your hardness of heart
Moses allowed you to divorce your wives;
But in the beginning it was not so.
“Therefore I say to you :
Whoever divorces his wife, and not for fornication .
And marries another, commits adultery;
And whoever marries a divorced woman, commits adultery”.
The disciples said to Him:
“If the relationship between husband and wife is like this
it is better not to marry.
He replied:
“Not everyone can understand this ,
but only those to whom it is given.
“There are unmarried people
who came out of the womb this way ;
and there are ignorant ones
who were made this way by humans;
But there are also unmarried people
who have made themselves unfit for marriage
for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.
