Consideration

Ezekiel is relentless in denouncing Israel’s sin and unfaithfulness. He questions retribution for the wickedness of the forefathers. His answer is bold: a God-honouring generation will not atone for the sins of the forefathers, and a sinful generation will not be forgiven for the good deeds of the forefathers. Each person and each generation is judged by God according to their own deeds. Ezekiel illustrates this with the example of the good father and the wicked son.

FIRST READING                Ezek. 18, 1-10. 13b. 30-32

I will judge each of you according to his own conduct.

From the prophet Ezekiel

Thus the word of the Lord was addressed to me:
“How is it that you ,
How can you apply this proverb to the land of Israel?
The fathers eat sour grapes, the children get bad teeth?
“As I live – so is the word of the Lord God.
No one should use this proverb in Israel anymore.
“Truly, all men are equal before Me
And the son is as good to Me as the father.
“Only the man who commits sin: he shall die!
“If anyone is righteous and acts according to law and justice ,
if he does not keep a sacrificial meal on the mountains
and does not lift up his eyes to the idols of the people of Israel,
if he does not dishonour his neighbour’s wife
and does not have sexual intercourse
with an unclean woman,
if he does not oppress anyone,
returns the pledge to the debtor and does not commit theft,
if he shares his bread with the hungry
and helps clothe the naked
if he does not borrow at interest,
if he does not take subsidies,
does not commit injustice
and resolves disputes justly,
if he acts according to my commandments
and observes my ordinances scrupulously,
then such a person is righteous and will live.
-says the Lord God.
“But now, if that man begets a son
who is a scoundrel and a blood-spreader
and who unfortunately does any of the aforementioned things?
“Will he then live?
“No, he won’t.
“He has committed all these abominations.
And he will surely die.
“His blood will be on him.

“I will judge each one of you according to his conduct.
people of Israel.
– Thus speaks the Lord God.
“Repent and turn away from all your misdeeds,
otherwise you will fall righteously.
“Cast away all your misdeeds
which you have committed ,
from yourselves;
Give yourselves a new heart and a new spirit.
“Why are you willing to die, O people of Israel?
“Because I take no pleasure
in the death of him who must die,
– so says the Lord God.
“Repent therefore and abide!”

INTERLUDIUM            Ps. 51(50), 12-13, 14-15, 18-19

Create in me a pure heart, O my God.

Create in me a pure heart, my God,
Restore in me a steadfast spirit
Do not turn me away from your face
Do not take away your Holy Spirit from me.

Give me again the opulence of your blessing,
make me strong in generosity.
Then I will teach the erring Your ways,
I will lead all the guilty back to You.

You are not pleased with gifts,
whatever I offer you, you will not do.
What I offer You, God, is my atonement,
a bruised and humbled heart that You do not reject.

ALLELUIA              Ps. 95(94), 8ab

Alleluia.
Listen today to the voice of the Lord
And do not be stubborn.
Alleluia

GOSPEL                Mt 19, 13-15

Let the little children go before you
For to them belongs the kingdom of heaven.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Matthew

In those days they brought little children to Jesus
that he might lay hands on them
and pray for them.
But the disciples rejected them.
Jesus, however, said:
“Let these little children go ahead anyway
and do not prevent them from coming to Me.
“For to them belongs the kingdom of heaven.
the kingdom of heaven belongs to such people.
And when He had laid hands on them
He departed from there.

Fratelli tutti

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

8. It is my heartfelt wish that in this time in which we live ,
with recognition of the dignity of every human being among ourselves
that a worldwide commitment to brotherhood among us all may be rekindled.
will arise. Among all: “That is a beautiful secret to dream of and make of our lives a beautiful adventure.
To make our lives a beautiful adventure. No one can face life
face life in isolation […]. We need a community
that supports us, helps us and in which we help each other to look forward […].
How important it is to dream together! […] There is only
danger of having mirage dreams, of seeing what does not exist; dreams are realised together.
are realised together”.
We dream as one humanity, as workers of the same human flesh, as children of the same human flesh, as children of the same human flesh.
of the same human flesh, as children of the same earth, which houses us all, each with the same
all housed together, each with the richness of his or her faith or belief, each with his or her own voice, all brothers and sisters!
