Twentieth sunday through the year

Invitation

May I draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel

This invitation seeks to convey the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Opening the Word

We are invited to the Lord’s table
To feed on what really matters.
After all, Jesus tells us:
‘I am the bread of life
who forever satisfies your deepest hunger’.
When we eat of the bread and drink of the cup, we share fully in the life of God,
we share fully in the life of God.
We become one with him
who gave himself completely
that we might live.
Later, let us not only open our hands,
but also open our hearts to receive Jesus.

FIRST READING                      Spr. 9, 1-6

Eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed.

From the book of Proverbs

Wisdom has built herself a house
seven pillars she has hewn for herself,
she hath slaughtered her cattle
she has mixed her wine
she has prepared her table.
Now she sends her virgins,
at the highest points of the city they must call out:
“Whoever has no experience, let him come here
and he who has no understanding, let him come to his senses.
“Come and eat of my bread
drink of the wine I have mixed.
“Abandon your folly and you will live,
walk in the way of wisdom”.

RESPONSORIAL               Ps 34(33), 2-3, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15

Refrain
Taste and notice how meek the Lord is.

I will praise the Lord all my days,
His praise is always on my lips.
My spirit is proud of the Lord’s favour,
Let all who hear it rejoice.

Honour the Lord, you who are devoted to him,
For he who honours Him never falls short.
The rich have become poor and needy,
those who go to the Lord never lack.

Come, children, listen to what I say to you;
I teach you to fear the Lord.
Those of you who love life
and longs for prosperous days?

Therefore restrain your tongue from evil words
your lips from lying words.
Then avoid evil and do only what is right,
Seek peace always and do not let it slip away.

SECOND READING                    Eph. 5, 15-20

Be wise to understand what the Lord wants.

From the holy apostle Paul’s letter to the Christians of Ephesus.
Ephesus

Brothers and sisters,

take care how you behave
as wise men and not as fools.
Take advantage of favourable times, because times are bad.
Therefore be wise
but try to understand what the Lord wants.
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.
But be encouraged by the Spirit.
Speak to one another in psalms, hymns and songs inspired by the Spirit.
inspired by the Spirit.
Sing and touch the Lord with all your heart.
Thank God the Father always for everything
in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel verse                 John 6.56

Alleluia.
He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood
abides in me and I in him
says the Lord.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                                  Jn 6, 51-58

My flesh is true food.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John

At that moment, Jesus said to the crowd:

“I am the living bread
which came down from heaven.
“If anyone eats of this bread
he will live forever.
“The bread I will give is my flesh.
I am the life of the world.

The Jews argued with each other over this, saying:
“How can he give us his flesh to eat?”.

Jesus then spoke to them:
“Truly, I say to you.
If you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man
and do not drink his blood
then you have no life in you.
“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood ,
has eternal life
and I will raise him up on the last day.
“For my flesh is true food
and my blood is true drink.
“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood
abides in Me and I in him.
“As I am sent by the Father who lives
and I live through the Father
so whoever eats Me
lives through Me.
“This is the bread that came down from heaven.
“It is not as with the fathers
who ate and yet died:
whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

9. Without pretending to make an exhaustive analysis
or to consider all aspects of the reality in which we live, I only want to draw attention to some trends of
consideration, I only want to draw attention to some tendencies of today’s world that hinder the development of brotherhood and social friendship of today’s world that hinder the development of universal brotherhood.
