Consideration
Liturgical tradition identifies Bartholomew with Natanael, from John’s vocation story. Bartholomew was informed by Philip of his encounter with Jesus: ‘The One about whom Moses wrote in the Law and also the prophets, Him we have found: Jesus, the son of Joseph of Nazareth’. Like any right-believing Israelite, Natanael knew that the Messiah had to come from Bethlehem, from the tribe of David. That is why he initially reacts from on high, ‘Surely nothing good can come from Nazareth? At that, Philip brings his friend to Jesus himself.
This is how God’s voice works in us: It calls us and leads us through others. God does not want to work alone; he invites us to participate in his kingdom. Are we too not tools, inviting others to become acquainted with the Lord?

FIRST READING            Apok. 21, 9b-14

On the foundation stones were the names
of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

From the Revelation of the holy apostle John

An angel came to me and said :
“Come!
“I will show you the Bride of the Lamb.”
And he brought me in the spirit to a very high mountain
and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem,
as she descended from God out of heaven,
radiant with the glory of God :
She shone like the most precious stone
and like crystalline jasper.
The City was surrounded by a very high wall with twelve gates
And at the gates stood twelve angels ;
names were inscribed thereon,
the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.
There were three gates on the east, three on the north,
three on the south and three on the west.
And the city wall had twelve foundation stones
and on them the twelve names
of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

INTERLUDIUM               Ps. 145(144), 10-11, 12-13ab, 17-18

Your saints, Lord, make your power
to men.

Your works shall praise You, Lord,
Your pious ones will praise You.
They praise the glory of Your rule,
thy power they proclaim.

They shall make Your power known to men,
the splendour of Your kingdom.
Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages,
your rule is for every generation.

The Lord is righteous in all his ways,
and holy in all He does.
Near is the Lord to every one who calls on Him,
to every one who prays sincerely to Him.

ALLELUIA                   John 1, 49b

Alleluia.
Rabbi, thou art the Son of God,
Thou art the King of Israel.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                       Jn 1, 45-51

Truly this is an Israelite in whom there is no guile!

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John

At that time
Philip met Natanael and told him :
“The one about whom Moses wrote in the Law
And also the prophets,
Him we have found :
Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”
Natanael smirked :

“From Nazareth, can anything good come from there?”
To which Philip replied :
“Then come and see.”
Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him
and said, referring to him :
“That is truly an Israelite in whom there is no guile!”
Natanael said to Him :
“How knowest thou me?”
Jesus answered him in reply :
“Before Philip called thee
I saw thee sitting under the fig tree.”
Then Nathanael said to Him :
“Rabbi,
Thou art the Son of God.
“Thou art the King of Israel.”
Jesus replied :
“Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe ?
“Thou shalt see greater things than these.”
And He added :
“Verily, verily, I say unto thee :
Thou shalt see the heavens open
and see the angels of God ascending and descending
in the service of the Son of Man.”

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

Without a project for all
15. The best way to rule and continue unbounded is to
to sow despair and generate constant distrust, under the
guise of defending some values. Today, people use
the political mechanism of inciting, aggravating and
polarising. In various ways, people deny others the right to
to exist and think and to this end they resort to ridiculing them
ridicule them, insinuate suspicions against them, surround them
surround them. One does not accept their share of truth and their values
and in this way society impoverishes and is reduced to
the arrogance of the strongest. Politics thus ceases to be a healthy discussion of long-term projects for the development of all and
of the common good, but offers only fleeting
marketing recipes, finding in the destruction of the other the most effective means. In this petty game of disqualifications, the
manipulating the debate to keep it in a state of controversy and contradiction.
