Consideration
The disputes between the various groups in Corinth disappear in the day’s reading (perhaps because they appear in the Sunday liturgy). Immediately we are confronted with the deep question underlying all this: worldly wisdom or the folly of the cross? Corinth was a unique confrontation for Paul. He faced a bewildering mix of the most diverse ideologies in a Hellenistic metropolis. But all his wisdom and eloquence, all his pretensions clashed with the reality of a crucified Christ. Paul will respond briefly to some of the problems, but at this point any compromise is impossible.
FIRST READING I Corinthians 1:17-25
We proclaim a crucified Christ,
to men a stumbling block
but to those who are called, wisdom from God.
From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the Christians of Corinth
Brothers and sisters,
Christ did not send me to baptise.
He sent me to preach the gospel,
and not with beautiful and wise words;
Otherwise the cross of Christ would lose its power.
For the preaching of the cross
is foolishness to those who are lost ,
but to those who are saved, to us it is a divine power.
it is a divine power.
For it is written:
‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and the wit of the learned
and the wit of the wise I will destroy’.
The wise, the learned, the strongholds of this age,
Where are they?
Has God made the wisdom of the world
Has He not made folly?
In the wisdom of God has the world with all its wisdom
Not found God;
Therefore God has decided to save those who believe
through the foolishness of proclamation.
The Jews demand miracles, the Greeks demand wisdom.
But we proclaim a crucified Christ,
to the Jews an offence, to the Gentiles folly;
but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks,
that Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.
For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is wiser than men.
And the weakness of God is stronger than men.
INTERLUDIUM Ps 33(32), 1-2, 4-5, 10-11
The earth is full of the loveliness of the Lord.
Rejoice, ye righteous, before the Lord,
praise him, ye godly.
Honour the Lord by playing on the citrine tree
And play for him on the harp.
For the word of the Lord is right
And everything He does is trustworthy.
Law and justice He loves,
the earth is full of His goodness.
He overthrows the plans of the nations
He thwarts what the nations plot.
Eternal is the Lord’s plan,
what he has planned is for all generations.
ALLELUIA John 6:64b, 69b
Alleluia.
Your words, Lord, are spirit and life.
Your words are words of eternal life.
Alleluia
GOSPEL Mt 25:1-13
There is the bridegroom, come to him!
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew
At that time, Jesus spoke to his disciples in parables.
He said:
‘Then it will happen in the kingdom of heaven
as it happened to ten young women who went out with their lamps
to meet the bridegroom.
‘Five of them were foolish
the other five were wise.
‘For the foolish had their lamps with them, but no oil .
But no oil;
But the wise took their lamps
also vessels of oil.
‘When the bridegroom awaited them
they all fell asleep and slept.
‘But in the middle of the night there was a cry:
There is the bridegroom, go and meet him!
‘Immediately all the girls woke up and lit their lamps.
And lit their lamps.
‘The dumb said to the wise, ‘Give us oil:
Give us oil
for our lamps are going out.
‘ But the wise men replied :
No, it should not be enough for us once and for you together.
‘Rather go to the sellers and buy some for yourselves.
‘But while they went to buy
came the bridegroom,
and those who were ready
went in with him to celebrate the wedding;
And the door was closed.
‘Later the other girls also came and said, ‘Lord, Lord, open!
Lord, Lord, open!
‘But he replied:
Verily I say unto thee, I know thee not.
‘Watch therefore, for ye know neither day nor hour.’
