Invitation
May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day.
Consideration
One suspects that there were several house churches in Corinth and tensions and rivalries between them. We heard from Paul himself that he was a not so versed orator. It is said of Apollos in Acts (18, 28) that he was a very clever and eloquent man. That is enough to stir up likes and dislikes in a Christian congregation. What do we do when faced with such divisions ?
FIRST READING I Cor. 3:1-9
We are God’s co-workers, you are God’s field,
God’s edifice.
From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the Christians
of Corinth
Brothers and sisters,
It was not possible for me at that time
to speak to you as if you were already spiritual
and no longer selfish.
In Christ you were so young!
I had to give you milk, not solid food;
thou couldst not yet bear it.
Even now thou canst not,
for thou art still guided by selfishness.
Or is it not an expression of selfishness and small-mindedness
that there is envy and strife among you?
If one says :
‘I am for Paul’,
and the other :
‘I for Apollos’ ,
are ye not too human?
What are Apollos and Paul anyway ?
No more than subordinates,
who were instrumental in your conversion,
and each of us in our own way
as the Lord has permitted us :
I planted,
Apollos watered
but God gave the growth.
Neither he who plants means anything
nor he who waters
but only God who gives the growth.
He who plants and he who waters are on a par
though each does receive wages according to his own labour.
We are God’s co-workers,
you are God’s field, God’s edifice.
INTERLUDIUM Ps 33(32), 12-13, 14-15, 20-21
Blessed are the people who have the Lord as God,
the nation chosen by Him to be His inheritance.
Blessed the people who have the Lord as God,
the nation chosen by Him to be His inheritance.
High from heaven God looks down,
looks down on the sons of men.
Sharply He watches from the place where He dwells
on all the inhabitants of the earth.
He has formed the hearts of all
and watches over their doings.
Therefore our hearts trust in the Lord,
He is our shield and helper.
Therefore He is the joy of our hearts,
His holy Name our refuge.
ALLELUIA John 14, 5
Alleluia.
I am the way, the truth and the life, says the Lord ;
no one comes to the Father except through Me.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 4, 38-44
I must also bring the Good News to other cities, because for this I was sent.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
At that time Jesus left the synagogue of Capernaum
and entered Simon’s house.
Because Simon’s mother-in-law had a high fever
they called for his help for her.
He came and stood at the head of her bed
and gave a stern command to the fever.
She was freed from it
and immediately she got up and served them.
At sunset, all brought their sick to Him ;
Those sick suffered from many ailments.
He healed them by laying hands on them one by one.
Out of many also went devils, shouting :
‘Thou art the Son of God.’
He gave a stern command and did not allow them to speak,
for they knew He was the Messiah.
When day had come, He went out
and went to a lonely place.
The people, however, sought Him,
came to where He was
and tried to hold Him
to prevent Him from leaving them.
But He spoke to them :
‘I must also bring to other cities
the Good News of the Kingdom of God ,
for for this I was sent.’
And He preached in the synagogues of the Jewish Land.

Fratelli tutti
Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
26. This should not be surprising, when we see the lack of horizons that
enable us to form unity, for in every war that which is
destroyed, ‘the project of brotherhood itself, which is written
in the vocation of the human family’, through which ’every situation of
threat feeds distrust and introspection’. Thus
our world continues in a meaningless dichotomy with the pretence of ‘stability and
guarantee peace on the basis of a false security borne
by a mentality of fear and distrust’.
