Consideration

After the divisions, Paul now moves on to other themes one by one, including fornication. Corinth was notorious for its loose morals, but this, Paul says, is way out of line. Here we have the first case of excommunication in the Church. Someone is banished from the Church, but essentially as a remedy, as a hope of reversal: ‘for the salvation of his spirit on the day of the Lord’. Paul also uses the symbolism of the Passover feast, where the Jews remove all traces of leaven from their homes.

FIRST READING                 I Cor. 5, 1-8

Put away the old leaven,
for our paschal lamb has been slaughtered: Christ himself.

From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the Christians of Corinth

Brothers and sisters,

One hears general talk of fornication among you
and of the kind
which does not occur even among the pagans:
That one lives with his father’s wife.
And ye still exalt yourselves above others?
Why hast thou not gone into mourning?
Then the man who did such a thing ,
would have been removed from thy midst.
Me for me,
though physically absent but present in spirit,
have already – as if I were with thee – passed judgment
on him who dared to do so.
And it reads:
In the name of the Lord Jesus, we must meet,
thou and I in spirit,
together with the power of our Lord Jesus,
and deliver that man to Satan,
unto the destruction of his body
but to the salvation of his spirit
on the day of the Lord.
Your complacency does not look pretty on you.
You know that a little sour dough is enough
to make the whole dough sour?
Do away with the old leaven to become fresh dough;
For thou must be like unleavened paschal bread,
for our paschal lamb too has been slaughtered:
Christ Himself.
We should not celebrate our feast with the old leaven,
with the corruption of wickedness and fornication
but with the pure bread of purity and truth.

INTERLUDIUM              Ps. 5, 5-6, 7, 12

Guide me along safe paths,
make smooth the path I walk.

Urgently, Lord, I turn to Thee,
Already early in the morning You hear my voice,
Already early my hope and desire.
Surely Thou art not a God who endures injustice,
with Thee no malefactor can abide.

No sinner can look into Thy eyes,
Thou hatest those who do injustice.
Thou annihilatest those who speak lies,
Thou abhors bloodlust and cruelty;

But bless those who turn to Thee
And make them happy forever.
Be Thou their protector and grant them Thy comfort
Because they love Thy name.

ALLELUIA            cf. Acts 16, 14b

Alleluia.
Make us receptive, Lord,
and that we turn to the word of Your Son.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL               Lk. 6, 6-11

One kept an eye on Jesus
Whether He would perform a healing on Sabbath.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

It happened on a Sabbath,
when Jesus went into the synagogue to teach there,
that a man was present
with a shrivelled right hand.
The scribes and Pharisees were watching Jesus
whether He would perform a healing on the Sabbath,
to find something they might accuse Him of.
But He knew what they were thinking
and He said to the man with the shriveled hand:
‘Get up and come into the middle.’
The man stood up and approached.
Thereupon Jesus spoke to the Pharisees:
‘I ask you:
Is it not lawful on Sabbath to do good rather than evil,
to save someone than to cause him to perish?’
Then He made His glance go round about them all and said to the man :
‘Hold out your hand.’
He did so, and his hand was healthy again.
Then they were beside themselves with anger
and they discussed among themselves what they could do against Jesus.

Fratelli tutti

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

31. In this world that sails without a common course, one breathes
an atmosphere in which ‘the distance between the obsession with one’s own
well-being and the shared happiness of humankind seems to grow ever wider:
one even thinks that between the individual and the human
community a real schism is underway. […] For one thing is feeling
compelled to live together, another thing is the richness and the
beauty of the seeds of communal life to be appreciated
that must be sought and cultivated together’. Technology is making
constant progress, but ‘how wonderful it would be, if to the growth
of scientific and technological innovations also an ever-increasing
greater social equality and inclusion! How
beautiful would it be, if, as we discover new distant planets, we could rediscover the
needs of the brother and sister, who orbit me
orbit!’
