Consideration
Paul addresses the issue of Christians having to appear for trials before pagan judges. How can one bring a fellow Christian before a pagan court? If judgment is to be passed anyway, then within the Christian community, with a wise Christian as judge. Thanks to God’s justice, all will be sanctified in the Name of Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit.
FIRST READING I Cor. 6, 1-11
One brother litigates against another
and that still before unbelievers.
From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the Christians
of Corinth
Brothers and sisters,
Apparently there are some among you
who when they have an issue with their neighbour,
seek justice with the unrighteous
and not with the saints.
Do ye not know that the saints will judge the world?
And if the judgment of the world rests with thee ,
would ye not then be competent
for the most trivial cases of justice?
Knowest thou not that we shall judge angels?
How much more than over mundane things.
For disputes of this kind thou hadst to judge those
who do not count in the congregation to sit.
This I say to shame thee.
Surely there is a sensible man among you
who can pass judgment between brothers?
Instead, one brother litigates against another
and even before unbelievers.
That ye litigate against each other is sad enough.
Why do ye not rather suffer injustice?
Why dost thou not let thyself be wronged?
But ye yourselves commit injustice,
ye yourselves do harm,
and to your brothers.
Do you not know that those who do injustice
will not inherit the kingdom of God?
Do not deceive yourselves!
Whoremongers, idolaters, adulterers,
scandal-mongers, weapons violators,
thieves, misers, drunkards,
slanderers, swindlers,
they will not inherit the kingdom of God.
And some of you have been
but now ye have washed yourselves clean :
Ye are sanctified, ye are justified
in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ
and by the Spirit of our God.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 149, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6a, 9b
Our Lord, who loves his people,
wreaths the afflicted with wreaths of victory.
Or : Alleluia.
Sing to the Lord a new song,
His praise resounds in the midst of His people.
Israel cheers its Creator,
let Zion’s sons salute their King.
Praise His Name in a holy dance,
play harp and zither before Him.
For our Lord, who loves His people,
wreathes the oppressed with wreaths of victory.
So rejoice, saints, for your triumph,
celebrate in your army places.
Go with the song of God in your mouths,
a task that honours His pious ones.
ALLELUIA II Cor. 5, 19
Alleluia.
It was God who in Christ
reconciled the world to himself,
and He gave us the message of reconciliation.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 6, 12-19
Jesus spent the night in prayer.
He chose twelve disciples,
to whom He also gave the name of apostle.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
In those days Jesus went to the mountains to pray
and spent the night there in prayer to God.
At daybreak He called His disciples to Himself
and chose twelve, to whom He also gave the name of apostle :
Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter,
his brother Andrew,
James and John,
Philip and Bartholomew,
Matthew and Thomas,
James the son of Alphaeus,
Simon nicknamed ‘Zealot’,
Judas the brother of James
and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Together with them He descended,
but He remained standing on level ground.
There was a numerous group of His disciples there
and a large crowd of people from all over the Jewish land,
from Jerusalem and from the coastal land of Tyre and Sidon.
They had come to hear Him
and to be healed of their ills.
And those tormented by unclean spirits found healing.
All that crowd made efforts to touch Him
for there went out from Him a power that healed all.

On brotherhood and social friendship.
Pandemics and other scourges of history
32. For a certain time really raised awareness of being a global community
to be in the same boat, where the evil of some comes at the expense
of others. We were reminded that no one can save themselves alone,
but that we can only save ourselves together. That is why
I said that ‘the storm unmasked our vulnerability and exposed the false and
superfluous certainty with which we set our agendas, our
projects, our habits and priorities. […] With the
storm, the masks of the stereotypes with which we built our
‘egos’, which were always concerned with one’s own image, masked; and became
once again exposed that (blessed) connectedness from which we cannot
can escape: the connection of being brothers and sisters’.
