We have already mentioned the existence of house churches in Corinth with the rivalries that entailed. Perhaps the ‘ecclesia’ was the gathering of all and apparently that went hand in hand with practices that deeply annoyed Paul. He wants to return to tradition and immediately this is immensely important for us. We are given, thanks to the abuses in Corinth, the oldest text concerning the institution of the Eucharist and its communal character.
FIRST READING I Cor. 11:17-26.33
If partisanship manifests itself among you
then there can be no question of the Lord’s Supper.
From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the Christians
of Corinth
Brothers and sisters,
I must express my disapproval
That ye hold your meetings in a manner
which does you more harm than good.
To begin with, I hear
that at the meetings of thy congregation
party manifestations
and I am inclined to believe it :
Disagreements are now inevitable
if it is to prove which of your members are trustworthy.
As you are meeting now
there can be no question of
‘the Lord’s meal’.
For each one hastily eats his own meal
so that some go hungry and others are drunk.
Surely ye have houses to eat and drink ?
Or do ye despise the congregation of God
and wilt thou shame those who have nothing?
What am I to say to this ?
Can I praise thee ?
Certainly not at this point.
For I myself have received from the Lord the tradition
which I in turn have passed on to thee :
That the Lord Jesus
on the night in which He was delivered up,
took bread
and after giving thanks broke it
and said :
‘This is my body for you.
‘Do this to my remembrance.’
Similarly, after the meal, He took the cup
with the words :
‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood.
‘Do this
every time ye drink it
to my remembrance.’
Every time ye eat this bread and drink the cup
do ye proclaim the Lord’s death
until he comes again.
Therefore, brothers and sisters,
when ye come together for the meal,
wait for one another.

Proclaim the Lord’s death,
until He comes again (cf; I Cor. 11, 26b).
Gift and offering have Thou never desired,

At that time Jesus,
after finishing his teaching to the listening people,
went to Capernaum.
There was a hundred man there, who had a servant
to whom he was greatly indebted;
that servant was sick and was dying.
Because the hundred-man heard of Jesus,
he sent some of the elders of the Jews to Him
asking them to come and heal his servant.
Coming to Jesus, they urgently appealed for His help.
They said:
‘He deserves Thou to grant him this favour ,
for he loves our people
and he has built the synagogue for us at his own expense.’
At that, Jesus went with them.
But when He was not far from the house,
the hundred-man had friends tell Him:
‘Lord, make no further effort;
I am not worthy that Thou shouldst come under my roof.
Therefore I also thought I had no claim to it
to come to Thee personally.
But a word from Thee is sufficient
To cause my servant to be healed.
For though I myself am a subordinate,
I again have men under me:
And to one I say, Go, and he goes,
And to another: Come, and he cometh,
and to my servant, Do this, and he does it.’
When Jesus heard this, He stood amazed at him.
He turned and said to the people following Him:
‘I say to you:
even in Israel I have not found such great faith.’
When the people who had been sent returned to the house,
they found the servant healthy again.

38. Sadly, some “are attracted by Western culture, sometimes with unrealistic expectations that expose them to grave disappointments. Unscrupulous traffickers, frequently linked to drug cartels or arms cartels, exploit the weakness of migrants, who too often experience violence, trafficking, psychological and physical abuse and untold sufferings on their journey” Those who emigrate “experience separation from their place of origin, and often a cultural and religious uprooting as well. Fragmentation is also felt by the communities they leave behind, which lose their most vigorous and enterprising elements, and by families, especially when one or both of the parents migrates, leaving the children in the country of origin”. For this reason, “there is also a need to reaffirm the right not to emigrate, that is, to remain in one’s homeland”.
