Consideration

Paul’s teaching on the Church(ecclesiology) is one of the main emphases of the First Corinthians letter: The teaching on the Body of Christ, image of the Church. Already in Greek and Roman literature one finds this image of the body in unity and diversity. Paul makes grateful use of it to interpret the distinct function of each member and the equality of each member in the great whole of the Church. The last sentence ‘strive for the highest gifts’ forms the bridge to chapter 13.

FIRST READING           I Cor. 12:12-14,27-31a

You are the body of Christ
and every one of you is a member of that body.

From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the Christians
of Corinth

Brothers and sisters,

The human body
with its many limbs one whole;
all the limbs, however many, together form one body.
So it is also with Christ.
All of us, Jews and Greeks, slaves and free,
are in the power of one and the same Spirit
became one body through baptism,
and we were all watered with one Spirit.
After all, a body does not consist of one member.

Now ye are the body of Christ
and every one of you is a member of that body.
Now God has appointed in the church all kinds of people :
First, apostles,
secondly prophets,
thirdly teachers;
further, there are miracle workers,
then gifts of healing, counselling, administration and many tongues.
Are sometimes all apostles,
all prophets, all teachers,
all miracle workers?
Do all have gifts of healing?
Do all speak in rapture?
Can all give explanations?
Thou must strive for the highest gifts.

INTERLUDIUM               Ps. 100(99), 2, 3, 4,5

We are the Lord’s flock, his people.

Rejoice for the Lord, all nations,
serve the Lord with joy.
Enter unconcerned before His Face ;
Verily, the Lord is God.

He is the Creator and Master,
we are his flock, his people.
Pass through his gates with song,
enters his court with song.

Bless His Name and honour Him,
He is good to us.
Endless is His mercy,
faithful from generation to generation.

ALLELUIA                2 Tim. 1, 10b

Alleluia.
Our Saviour Christ Jesus has destroyed death,
and lit up imperishable life
through the gospel.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                  Lk. 7, 11-17
Young man, I say to you : get up!

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

In those days Jesus went to a town called Naïn ;
His disciples and a large group of people went with Him.
He had just come near the city gate
when a dead person was carried out of there,
the only son of his mother
who was a widow.
A large number of people from the city accompanied her.
When the Lord saw her
He felt pity for her and spoke :
‘Do not weep.’
Thereupon He approached the bier and touched it.
The bearers remained standing and He spoke :
‘Young one, I tell you: get up!’
The dead man sat up and began to speak
and Jesus returned him to his mother.
All were struck with awe
and they glorified God and said :
‘A great prophet has risen among us,’ and :
‘God has mercifully looked down on His people.’
And this story about Him circulated
throughout the Jewish land and the wide surrounding area.

On brotherhood and social friendship

39. On top of this, ‘in some countries of arrival, migratory phenomena provoke
unrest and fear, which are often fuelled and abused for political purposes.
Thus, a xenophobic mentality of closing off and withdrawing on oneself spreads’.
Migrants are seen as people who are not sufficiently worthy
to participate in social life like anyone else, and it is forgotten that
they possess the same intrinsic dignity as everyone else. Therefore,
they ‘be the protagonists of their own liberation’. One will never say
that they are not human beings, but in practice the decisions and
the way they are treated shows that they are considered less valuable,
less important, less human. It is unacceptable for Christians to share
this mentality and attitude by sometimes allowing certain political
preferences to override deep convictions of their own faith: the inalienable
dignity of every human person regardless of origin, colour or religion,
and the supreme law of brotherly love.
