Consideration
Yesterday’s confession of faith is elaborated in an extended exposition on the resurrection. If Christ is not risen, everything Paul did is worthless and so is the Corinthians’ faith. Christians, past and present, are most unhappy if they put their hopes in Christ alone for this earthly life.
FIRST READING I Cor. 15:12-20
If Christ is not risen, your faith has no foundation.
From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the Christians
of Corinth
Brothers and sisters,
If we proclaim that Christ rose from the dead, why is it that some of you claim that Christ rose from the dead?
Why is it that some of you claim
that there is no resurrection of the dead?
If there is no resurrection of the dead ,
neither is Christ risen.
And if Christ is not risen
is our preaching without substance and your faith without foundation.
It even follows
That we have borne false witness against God ;
for then we have testified against God
That He raised Christ from the dead ,
which He has not done if, as they claim
the dead have not been raised.
For if the dead have not been raised, neither has Christ been raised ,
and if Christ is not risen
your faith is worthless and you remain in your sins.
Then even those who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost.
If only for this life
our hope in Christ
we are the most miserable of all people.
But this is not so.
Christ is risen from the dead
as the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 17(16), 1, 6-7, 8b, 15
Your gaze, O Lord, satisfies me when I awaken.
Hear, Lord, for my cause is righteous
Hear my loud cry.
Hear my prayer ;
my lips do not deceive Thee.
Now I call upon Thee, for Thou wilt hear me,
turn Thy ear to me, hear my voice.
Show me the greatness of Thy mercy,
Saviour of all who flee into Thy hand.
Hide me in the shelter of Your wings
For I am righteous and can behold Thee;
Your sight satisfies me when I awaken.
ALLELUIAH I Petr. 1, 25
Alleluia.
The word of the Lord endures forever ;
and this word is the message
proclaimed in the Gospel.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 8, 1-3
The women accompanied the Lord;
They cared for him by their own means.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
In those days Jesus went around preaching
through towns and villages
and proclaimed the Good News of the Kingdom of God.
He was accompanied by the twelve
as well as some women
who had been delivered from evil spirits and diseases:
Mary, called Magdalene,
from whom seven demons had come,
Johanna, the wife of Herod’s steward, Chuzas,
Susanna and many others who cared for them by their own means.

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
The illusion of communication
42. Oddly enough, while closed and intolerant attitudes towards others are on the rise, distances are otherwise shrinking or disappearing to the point that the right to privacy scarcely exists. Everything has become a kind of spectacle to be examined and inspected, and people’s lives are now under constant surveillance. Digital communication wants to bring everything out into the open; people’s lives are combed over, laid bare and bandied about, often anonymously. Respect for others disintegrates, and even as we dismiss, ignore or keep others distant, we can shamelessly peer into every detail of their lives.
