Tuesday in the twenty-fifth week through the year

Boek met kaars 40

Invitation

May I draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel

This invitation seeks to convey the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration

The readings from the book of Proverbs are somewhat misleading: they give the impression of being a continuous text, when in fact it is often a proverb covering only two verses, eminently in the Semitic style. Moreover, such a proverb is also separate from what follows. So we read proverb by proverb. The frequent occurrence of the same proverbs in the book proves the accumulation of collections into a whole.

FIRST READING                  Proverbs 21, 1-6. 10-13

Miscellaneous advice.

From the book of Proverbs

Like a flowing stream of water is the king’s heart
in the hand of the Lord;
He leads him whither he will.
A man may think that all his ways are right,
but the Lord weighs hearts.
Acting according to law and equity
The Lord is better pleased than with sacrifices.
Confused eyes and haughty heart :
the splendour of the wicked is sin.
The thoughtfulness of a diligent man brings only profit,
but the thoughtless one finds nothing but poverty.
Treasures acquired with a lying tongue,
Its vapours carried by the wind, fall dead.
The heart of the wicked is addicted to evil
And knows no compassion for his neighbour.
If one punishes a scoffer, the fool becomes wiser;
If one teaches a wise man, he acquires knowledge.
The Just watches over the house of the unjust
And He plunges the unjust into destruction.
He who closes his ears to the cry of distress of the poor ,
Will himself also cry to deaf ears.

INTERLUDIUM               Ps 119(118), 1, 27, 30, 34, 35, 4

Lead me, O Lord, in the paths of your commandments.

Blessed are those whose way of life is pure
who walk according to the law of the Lord.

Lead me in the way of your commandments
and I will be mindful of your works.

I have chosen the way of faithfulness,
I keep what you command.

Give me insight to keep your law
To follow it wholeheartedly.

Lead me in the paths of your commandments
In which I find my joy.

Your law I will keep faithfully always,
forever and ever.

Alleluia           Ps. 27(26), 11

Alleluia.
Show me your way, O Lord, in the face of opposition,
lead me on level paths.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                 Lk. 8:19-21

My mother and my brothers are those
who hear the word of God and keep it.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

At that moment his mother came to Jesus with his brothers,
but because of the crowd they could not get to him.
Then one of them said to him:
‘Your mother and your brothers are outside and want to speak to you’.
But he answered them:
‘My mother and my brothers are the ones
who hear the word of God and do it’.

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

46. We should also recognize that destructive forms of fanaticism are at times found among religious believers, including Christians; they too “can be caught up in networks of verbal violence through the internet and the various forums of digital communication. Even in Catholic media, limits can be overstepped, defamation and slander can become commonplace, and all ethical standards and respect for the good name of others can be abandoned”.  How can this contribute to the fraternity that our common Father asks of us?
