Invitation
May I draw your attention to
The daily reading of the Gospel
This invitation seeks to convey the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day.
Consideration
Today we hear a gem of a prayer: Lord, preserve me from two things: falsehood and extreme wealth or poverty. Extreme wealth makes one overconfident and distracts from God. Extreme poverty can lead to theft. ‘My secret is very simple: it is contained in these few words: give everything and keep nothing for yourself. We are beggars who need to ask God for everything. An ardent prayer to God, that is man’s most perfect happiness on earth’ (J.-M. Vianney).
FIRST READING Spr. 30, 5-9
Give me neither poverty nor riches, but let me eat of the bread that is set before me.
From the book of Proverbs
Every word of God is purified by fire;
To those who lean on Him, He is a shield.
You shall add nothing to His words
For then He would call you to order
And you would be a liar.
Lord, there are two things, for which I beg You;
Do not deny them to my death:
Put away falsehood and falsity from me
And give me neither poverty nor wealth
But let me eat
Eat the bread allotted to me.
Then I shall run no risk
That in my pride I will deny Thee
and say, Who is the Lord?
Nor shall I steal in poverty
And offend the name of my God.
INTERLUDIUM Ps 119 (118), 29, 72, 89, 101, 104, 163
Your word, O Lord, is a lamp to my feet.
Let me not go astray
But give me your law to guide me.
The law of your mouth is more precious to me
than treasures of silver and gold.
Your word, O Lord, endures forever.
It stands firm in heaven.
From evil ways I refrain my steps
That I may always obey your word.
By Your commands I become wise
And I turn away from the evil way.
I hate and abhor injustice
I love your law.
Alleluia Ps 119(118), 18
Alleluia.
Open my eyes to see, O Lord
The glory of your law
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 9, 1-6
Jesus sent out the twelve to proclaim the kingdom of God
and to perform healings.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
At that time Jesus called together the twelve
and gave them power and authority over all evil spirits and the power to heal diseases.
And the power to heal diseases.
And he sent them out
to proclaim the kingdom of God and to do healings.
And he admonished them:
‘Take nothing for the road:
neither staff, nor bag, nor food, nor money;
None of you should have double clothing.
‘When you enter a house, you must stay there, and you must leave there.
And you must leave there.
‘If you are not received anywhere
then leave that city
and shake the dust from your feet, as a testimony against them.’
Then they set out and went from village to village
proclaiming the good news everywhere
and performed healings.

Information without wisdom
47. True wisdom demands an encounter with reality. Today, however, everything can be created, disguised and altered. A direct encounter even with the fringes of reality can thus prove intolerable. A mechanism of selection then comes into play, whereby I can immediately separate likes from dislikes, what I consider attractive from what I deem distasteful. In the same way, we can choose the people with whom we wish to share our world. Persons or situations we find unpleasant or disagreeable are simply deleted in today’s virtual networks; a virtual circle is then created, isolating us from the real world in which we are living.
