Consideration

For Ecclesiastes, death is the inevitable and final end of everything. Old age is harbinger of death. In extraordinary images, old age and then death are outlined first. The housekeepers, the hands, begin to tremble, the legs, the strong men, bow through, the teeth, the grinders fail, and the women at the window, the eyes, see no more, the ears, the house door falls into lock and the sounds become duller. The old man looks up to everything. And then death comes. A cord snapping off, a bowl breaking, a pitcher breaking and the scooping wheel falling. Everything is so vain and over. Psalm 20 underlines this thought.

FIRST READING             Ecclesiastes 11.9-12.8

Remember your Creator in the days of your youth,
before the dust returns to the earth,
and the spirit of life returns to God.

From the Book of Ecclesiastes

Young man, be cheerful in thy youth
And let your heart be merry, in your young years.
Be guided by what your heart desires
And by what your eyes see,
but remember
that God will hold you accountable for all that.
Repel bitterness from your heart
and keep from suffering
for youth and the dawn are fleeting.
Remember your Creator in the days of your youth,
before the evil days come
and the years draw near
of which thou shalt say, ‘They please me not!’,
before the sun darkens
and also the light and the moon and the stars,
before the clouds return after the rain,
before the caretakers tremble
and the strong men cringe,
and the grinders no longer do her work
because her numbers have become too small,
and over her looking out through the bars darkness descends,
before the street doors close
and the sound of the mill grows duller
and the voice of the bird sounds thinner
and those who sing fall silent,
before one looks up every hillside
and anxious in the street,
-then the almond tree blossoms,
the locust is satiated
and the barberry bursts open,
while man departs for his eternal home
and the complainers are already roaming the streets –
before the silver cord is loosened
and the golden bucket is broken,
and the pitcher at the well is shattered
and the pulley falls broken into the well
and the dust goes back to the earth
from whence it came,
and the spirit of life returns to God
who gave it.
Vanity of vanities, says Ecclesiastes,
and all is vanity.

INTERLUDIUM            Ps. 90(89), 3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14, 17

You, Lord, have always been our refuge
For every generation anew.

That which is mortal perishes again to dust,
Thou sayest : Return, child of man!
To Thee a thousand years are one day,
as yesterday that is already past,
an hour of sleep in the night.

Our life breaks down like a dream in the morning,
briefly it is like grass on the field.
In the morning it germinates and sprouts,
in the evening it withers.

Teach us to value our days
and so come to wisdom of heart.
Let go, Lord, how long wilt thou torment us?
Have mercy on thy servants.

Grant us from now on Your richest blessing
And let all our lives be happy.
Thy blessing, Lord God, may watch over us,
guide our hands in all they do.

ALLELUIA              Hebrews 4:12

Alleluia.
The word of God is alive and powerful,
and it penetrates to the fulcrum of soul and spirit.
Alleluia

GOSPEL                 Lk. 9,43b-45

The Son of Man will be delivered up.
The disciples shrank from
Questioning Him about this.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

At that time,
while everyone was marvelling at all that Jesus was doing,
He spoke to His disciples :
‘Have an open ear to what I say to you.
‘The Son of Man will be delivered up
into the hands of men.’
Although they did not understand these words
-they remained veiled to them,
so that they could not grasp it –
they shrank from questioning Him about it.

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

50. Together, we can seek the truth in dialogue, in relaxed conversation or in passionate debate. To do so calls for perseverance; it entails moments of silence and suffering, yet it can patiently embrace the broader experience of individuals and peoples. The flood of information at our fingertips does not make for greater wisdom. Wisdom is not born of quick searches on the internet nor is it a mass of unverified data. That is not the way to mature in the encounter with truth. Conversations revolve only around the latest data; they become merely horizontal and cumulative. We fail to keep our attention focused, to penetrate to the heart of matters, and to recognize what is essential to give meaning to our lives. Freedom thus becomes an illusion that we are peddled, easily confused with the ability to navigate the internet. The process of building fraternity, be it local or universal, can only be undertaken by spirits that are free and open to authentic encounters.
