Invitation

May I draw your attention to
The daily reading of the Gospel

This invitation seeks to convey the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of the Word of God.

Available every day

Opening the Word

The Lord gathers us in this house
and wants to fill us with His Spirit.
He inspires us to live as He lived.
He invites us to listen to His words
and share with Him in the bread He breaks for us.
In all our smallness, let us call on Him
and ask for His loving mercy.

FIRST READING                      Num. 11:25-29

Why do you defend me? Who makes all the people prophesy?

From the book of Numbers

In those days
the Lord descended in a cloud
and spoke to Moses and put some of the spirit
which rested on Moses, on the seventy elders.
And when the spirit rested on them, they prophesied ,
but after that they prophesied no more.
Two men remained in the camp.
The name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad.
The spirit also rested on them
-They were on the list, though they had not gone to the tent.
And they prophesied in the camp.

A boy hurriedly went to Moses and said:
‘Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.’
Joshua, the son of Nun
who had entered Moses’ service at a young age,
said to Moses:
‘My lord, you must forbid them this.’
Moses said to him
‘Why are you defending me?
He said, ‘I would like all the people to prophesy about the Lord.
And that the Lord would put his spirit on them’.

RESPONSORIAL                19(18), 8, 10, 12-13, 14

Refrain
All the commandments of the Lord are lawful.

The law of the Lord is perfect,
it strengthens the uncertain spirit.
His commandments are trustworthy
They make the ignorant wise.

The word of the Lord is just
It is eternally true.
His judgments are true
Just in all matters.

His servant takes them to heart,
He is richly rewarded for them.
But who notices all His faults?
Forgive also what I do not know.

Protect Your servant from pride,
give him no power over me.
Then I will be righteous and pure,
without spot of meanness.

SECOND READING                  James 5:1-6

Your wealth is rotten

From the letter of the holy apostle James

Brothers and sisters,

you who are rich
weep and lament over the calamity that befalls you.
Your riches are spoiled
Your fine clothes are spoilt by moths,
your gold and your silver are rusty.
That rust will testify against you
and will consume your flesh like fire.
Treasures you have accumulated,
while these are the last days.

Listen,
the wages you withheld
from the peasants who mowed your fields,
screams loudly,
and the cries of your mowers have penetrated
even to the ears of the Lord of heavenly powers.
Thou hast swelled and scalded in the earth
Thou hast grown fat for the slaughter day.
Thou hast condemned and slain the righteous;
hath no defence against thee.

Gospel verse                 Cf. John 17:17b.a

Alleluia.
Your word, O Lord, is truth.
Consecrate us to Thee in truth.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                    Mk 9:38-43,45,47-48

He who is not against you is for you.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark

At that moment John said to Jesus
‘Master, we have someone who does not follow us,
who is casting out demons in your name
and we tried to stop him
because he was not a follower of ours.

But Jesus said:
‘Do not prevent him,
for whoever performs a miracle in My Name,
will not speak so graciously unfavourably of Me.
He who is not against us is for us.’
‘If anyone gives you a cup of water to drink
because you belong to Christ, verily I say to you
his wages will not escape him.
‘But if anyone
gives sin to any of these little ones who believe ,
it would be better for him
if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
‘If your hand threatens to give you cause to sin ,
then cut it off ;
it is better for thee to enter life maimed
than to enter hell with two hands ,
into the unquenchable fire.
‘If thy foot offend thee ,
cut it off;
it is better for thee to enter life crippled
than to be thrown into hell with two feet.
‘If your eye offends you ,
pull it out;
It is better for you to enter the Kingdom of God with one eye
Than be cast into hell with two eyes,
where your worm does not die and the fire is not quenched’.

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

FORMS OF SUBJECTION AND OF SELF-CONTEMPT

51. Certain economically prosperous countries tend to be proposed as cultural models for less developed countries; instead, each of those countries should be helped to grow in its own distinct way and to develop its capacity for innovation while respecting the values of its proper culture. A shallow and pathetic desire to imitate others leads to copying and consuming in place of creating, and fosters low national self-esteem. In the affluent sectors of many poor countries, and at times in those who have recently emerged from poverty, there is a resistance to native ways of thinking and acting, and a tendency to look down on one’s own cultural identity, as if it were the sole cause of every ill.
