Invitation

May I draw your attention to
The daily reading of the Gospel

This invitation seeks to convey the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration
Today we hear the loud cry of a man who has not been able to prove his innocence and is therefore in anguish. Job has two options. Since he is about to die, he wants his cry for justice to be chiselled in stone so that it can continue to be heard after his death. Or God must intervene before his death and come to his rescue as a saviour in his final anguish. Psalm 27 articulates this longing.

FIRST READING             Job 19, 21-27
I am sure: my defender lives.

From the book of Job

In those days Job spoke thus:

‘Friends, have mercy on me
for the hand of God has struck me.
‘Why do you persecute me as God?
‘Why don’t you leave my vegetable body alone?
‘Ah, if only my words were recorded,
‘etched in something,
‘nailed to a rock by an iron marker
filled with lead – for a lasting testimony.
‘For I know: I am sure:
my defender lives,
eventually he will enter the arena.
‘And though I am so violated ,
I will see God from this body.
‘Beside me I will see Him, with my own eyes;
I almost die of desire.

INTERLUDIUM            Ps. 27(26), 7-8b, 9abc, 13-14

During my lifetime, I still count on
to experience the Lord’s benefits.

Lord, hear my voice crying out to you.
Be merciful and hear me.
To you my heart speaks, to you I look,
Your countenance, Lord, I seek to see.

Hide not thy face from me
Do not reject me, Your servant, in Your wrath,
for You are my helper, therefore do not turn me away.

I count still during my life
to experience the Lord’s benefits.
Wait on the Lord and stand boldly,
Be bold in heart and trust in the Lord.

Alleluia                  Ps 119(118)

Alleluia.
Lead me, Lord, in the way of your commandments.
Then I will be mindful of your works.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                    Lk. 10, 1-12
Let your first word be: Peace in this house!

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke

In those days the Lord appointed seventy-two disciples
and sent them out before Him, two by two
to all the cities and places
where He Himself wished to go.
And He spoke to them:
The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few.
Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into the harvest.
To send out labourers for the harvest.
Go then,
but behold, I am sending you out like lambs in the midst of wolves.
Carry no purse, no bag, no luggage, no shoes
and greet no one on the way.
Whatever house you enter, let your first word be:
Peace in this house!
Let a man of peace dwell there,
then your peace will rest on him;
If not, he will return to you.
Stay in that house and eat and drink what is offered to you;
For the hired servant is worth his wages.
Do not go from house to house.
In every city you enter and where you are received
eat what is set before you and heal the sick who are there.
And say to them: ‘The kingdom of God is near you.
In every city where you enter and they do not receive you
walk through its streets and say:
Even the dust of your city that clings to our feet
we shake off against you.
But know this: the kingdom of God is near,
I say to you, that on that day it will be more bearable for the people of Sodom
more bearable than for that city.

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

55. I invite everyone to renewed hope, for hope “speaks to us of something deeply rooted in every human heart, independently of our circumstances and historical conditioning. Hope speaks to us of a thirst, an aspiration, a longing for a life of fulfillment, a desire to achieve great things, things that fill our heart and lift our spirit to lofty realities like truth, goodness and beauty, justice and love… Hope is bold; it can look beyond personal convenience, the petty securities and compensations which limit our horizon, and it can open us up to grand ideals that make life more beautiful and worthwhile”.  Let us continue, then, to advance along the paths of hope.
