Invitation
May I draw your attention to
the daily Gospel reading
This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of the Word of God.
Available every day
Consideration
We follow Jesus on his journey to Jerusalem. Little by little, the meaning of this journey will become clear to us; it is the journey we all take, through life and suffering, on the way to Easter. From Jesus’ teaching we will learn day by day how to travel this road; what dangers and difficulties await us; but also what joy we will receive as Jesus leads us on this road to the kingdom of God. The book of Jonah already announces the core of the gospels to come. Repeatedly we hear the same words: Arise … go…; and he stood up. Do we dare to get up and go out to bear witness to the Lord?
FIRST READING Gal. 2:1-2,7-14
They recognised the grace given to me.
From the holy apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians
Brothers and sisters
I went to Jerusalem
together with Barnabas,
and I also took Titus with me.
God had instructed me to go.
I presented before them – that is, the standing men – the gospel.
in closed session the gospel
which I preach among the Gentiles.
I wanted to make sure
that I had not and would not work in vain.
They, for their part, recognised
that the gospel to the Gentiles had been entrusted to me,
just as to Peter the gospel had been entrusted to the Jews.
To the Jews.
For He
who had strengthened Peter for apostleship among the Jews,
gave me strength to be an apostle to the Gentiles.
Thus they recognised the grace that had been given to me
and they
-that is, James, Cephas and John, these pillars of support-
they extended their hands to Barnabas and me
as a sign of brotherhood:
We were to go to the Gentiles ,
they to the Jews.
But we had to keep thinking of their poor,
which I did with all my heart.
But when Cephas came to Antioch
I openly opposed him,
because evil was clearly on his side.
At first he ate alone with the pagan Christians,
but when some of James’ people arrived,
he began to withdraw and stay away
for fear of the men of circumcision.
The other Jewish Christians joined in this game;
Even Barnabas got carried away by their pretend behaviour.
When I saw that his behaviour
behaviour was not in line with the truth of the gospel,
I said to Cephas in front of everyone:
‘If you, a Jew by birth
live as a Gentile and not as a Jew ,
by what right
can you then force the Gentiles to live as Jews?
INTERLUDIUM Ps 116, 117(116), 1, 2
Go around the whole world
And proclaim the gospel to all creation.
O : Alleluia.
Praise the Lord, all the peoples of the earth,
Praise the Lord, all peoples of the earth.
For He has shown us His goodness;
the Lord’s faithfulness endures for ever.
ALLELUIAH Mt 11:25
Alleluia.
I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth
for You have
revealed to the children.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 11, 1-4
Lord, teach us to pray.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
Jesus was praying in a certain place.
When he stopped, one of his disciples said to him:
‘Lord
teach us to pray,
as John taught his disciples’.
He spoke to them:
‘When you pray, say :
Father, hallowed be Your name
Thy kingdom come.
‘Give us daily our daily bread
And forgive us our sins
For we too forgive our debtors.
‘And lead us not into temptation.’

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
61. There is a reason why the heart must be so broad that it
does not exclude the stranger, and this is already
found in the oldest texts of the Bible. It stems from the constant
remembrance of the Jewish people as having lived as a stranger in Egypt:
‘You must not treat a stranger badly or oppress him ,
for you yourselves were strangers in Egypt’ (Ex. 22:20).
‘Do not oppress a stranger. You also know the life of the stranger,
for you yourselves were strangers in Egypt.
‘When a stranger lives in your land, you must not oppress him.
The foreigners who live with you have the same rights as
those born to you. You must love them as yourself, for you yourselves
were strangers in Egypt’ (Lev. 19:33-34).
When you collect the harvest from your vineyard, do not return to collect the leftovers. That is the part of strangers, widows and orphans.
Remember that you were slaves in Egypt’ (Deut. 24:21-22).
In the New Testament, the call to brotherly love resonates strongly:
‘For there is one commandment which contains the whole law in its fullness, namely, Thou shalt
love thy neighbour as thyself’ (Gal. 5:14).
‘He who loves his brother abides in the light and does not fall.
But he who hates his brother is in darkness’ (1 Jn 2:10-11).
‘We know that we have passed from death into life because we love our brothers and sisters.
Those who do not love remain in the region of death’ (1 Jn 3:14).
‘For he who does not love his brother whom he sees cannot love God,
whom he has never seen’ (1 Jn 3:14).
