As his sixth argument against Galatians, Paul uses an allegory completely alien to us. He is reasoning along the lines of the rabbis of the time and that does not suit us. However, the argument reaches a sublime conclusion: ‘For this freedom Christ has set us free’. Christ’s death on the cross was a voluntary sacrifice and has redemptive value. It is the source of Christian freedom.

We are not the children of a slave woman,
our mother is a free woman.
From the holy apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians
Brothers and sisters,
We read that Abraham had two sons,
one by his slave wife and one by his free wife.
The son of the slave woman was born by force of nature,
the free woman’s son by the power of God’s promise.
These things have a deeper meaning.
The two women represent two covenants.
One, that of Mount Sinai, begets slaves.
While the Jerusalem above is the free woman,
and that is our mother.
For it is written:
‘Rejoice, barren woman
you who have never given birth;
Rejoice, you who have never given birth,
you who know no sorrow.
‘For the children of the unmarried woman are more numerous
than the children of her who has a husband’.
Brothers and sisters,
we are not the children of a slave,
our mother is a free woman.
Because of that freedom, Christ has made us free.
So stand firm
and do not let the yoke of slavery be imposed on you again.

66. It is better not to fall into this misery. Let us look at
the model of the Good Samaritan. It is a text that invites us
to our vocation as citizens of our country and of the whole world,
builders of a new social bond. It is a call that is always new, even
though it is written as a fundamental law of our being: that society must be directed
of our being: that society must be directed towards the pursuit of the
the common good and, proceeding from this objective, constantly maintain its
its political and social order, its structure of relations,
its human project. By his gestures, the Good Samaritan
show that ‘the existence of each of us is linked to that of others:
life is not a passing time, but a time of encounter’.
