Consideration
‘For freedom Christ has made us free.’ New in the Galatians letter is the teaching on justification by faith, versus justification by works. We find this even more strongly developed in the letter to Romans written shortly afterwards. The freedom from the Law applies not only to Gentiles, but also to Jews. The teaching from the Torah is clearly put into perspective here: an enduring stumbling block in the relationship between Christians and Jews.

FIRST READING                Gal. 5, 1-6
Being circumcised or not does not make the slightest difference ;
all that matters is faith, expressed in love.

From the Holy Apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians

Brothers and sisters,

For freedom Christ has set us free.
Therefore stand firm
and do not let the yoke of slavery be imposed on you again.

Mark my words.
I, Paul, say to you :
If you are circumcised
Christ will avail you nothing.
Again, with all emphasis :
Everyone who is circumcised
is obliged to keep the whole law.
If ye seek your salvation in the law,
then thou hast broken with Christ,
then you have forfeited God’s grace.
As for us,
we expect the hoped-for righteousness of faith
as the work of the Spirit.
If we are one with Christ Jesus,
being circumcised or not doesn’t make the slightest difference;
all that matters is faith,
expressed in love.

INTERLUDIUM               Ps 119(118), 41, 43, 44, 45, 47, 48

Now, Lord, let me receive Your mercy,
thy assistance, which thou hast promised.

Deprive not my mouth of the word of truth ;
On what thou hast determined I put my hope.

Thy law will I keep faithfully,
for ever and ever.

Then shall I go forth along broad roads,
For I desire only what Thou dost command.

I find my pleasure in Thy commandments,
I love them with all my heart.

To thy commandments I stretch forth my hands
And never do I forget what Thou hast ordained.

ALLELUIA            Jn 14:5

Alleluia.
I am the way, the truth and the life, says the Lord ;
no one comes to the Father except through Me.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL              Lk. 11, 37-41
Give alms ;
Then for you all things will be pure.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

At that time, a Pharisee invited Jesus
to have a meal with him.
So Jesus entered and lay down.
When the Pharisee saw this, he was amazed to see
that Jesus had not performed the ablutions before the meal.
But the Lord spoke to him :
‘And you then, Pharisees ,
ye do clean the outside of the cup and saucer,
but inside you are full of robbery and wickedness.
‘Fools!
‘Did He who made the outside
not also made the inside?
‘Give rather what is in it as alms ;
Then everything will be clean for you.’

Fratelli tutti

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

67. This parable is an illuminating image, capable of drawing attention
to the fundamental choice we must make in order to rebuild this world
with which we have to deal. In the face of
such great sorrow, so many wounds, the only way out is for us to be like the
Good Samaritan. Any other choice leads either to the side of the
robbers or to that of those who pass by without pitying
the grief of the wounded man by the roadside. The parable shows
us what kind of initiatives one can use to renew a community,
starting from men and women who identify with the frailty
of others, who do not allow themselves to build a society of exclusion,
but become neighbours and resurrect and
rehabilitate, so that well-being is common. At the same time,
the parable to us about certain attitudes of people who
only look at themselves and do not burden themselves with the inevitable
needs of human reality.
