We should probably think of the letter to the Ephesians as a letter to Christians throughout the region. It is not a strictly personal letter, like so many others that Paul wrote. Its content is rather a theological treatise. The writer of this letter – Paul or a disciple – certainly knew the letter to the Colossians, if he did not already have it in front of him. This explains the many similarities between the two texts. the letter to the Ephesians, however, shows greater theological development and depth. it must therefore be dated later: between 61 and 63.

From Paul,

Grace and peace to you
Because of God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ !
Blessed is God,
the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us in heaven in Christ
With every spiritual blessing.
In Him He has chosen us
Before the foundation of the world,
to be holy and spotless before Him.
In love He has predestined us
to become His children through Jesus Christ,
according to the good pleasure of His will,
to the praise of the glory of His grace.
With this He has endowed us in the Beloved,
in whom we have redemption through his blood,
the forgiveness of sins
thanks to the riches of his grace.
He has communicated it to us
as an abundance of wisdom and insight.
For He has made known to us His secret counsel,
the decision He had made in Christ

for the blood of all the prophets shed
from the foundation of the world.

At that time Jesus said to the lawgivers :
‘Woe to you!
‘Ye build the tombs of the prophets ,
but thy fathers slew them.
‘By this ye bear witness
That ye approve of the works of your fathers ,
for they killed them and ye build their tombs.
‘Therefore also God’s wisdom has said :
I will send prophets and emissaries to them ,
but some of them shall they slay and persecute,
so that this generation shall be held responsible
for the blood of all the prophets
which was shed from the foundation of the world,
from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zekariah,
who was slain between the altar and the temple building.
‘Yes, I tell you,
this generation shall be responsible !
‘Woe to you, lawgivers !
‘Thou hast taken away the key of knowledge.
‘Thyself thou hast not entered,

A history repeating itself
69. The story is simple and linear, but contains all the dynamics
of the inner struggle that takes place in the development of our identity,
in every existence on the way to realising human brotherhood.
Once we set out on our journey, we inevitably encounter
the wounded human being. Today, there are more and more wounded persons.
The inclusion or exclusion of those who suffer along the way determines all economic,
political, social and religious projects. Every day
we face the choice of being merciful Samaritans or indifferent
travellers who pass by at a distance. And if we extend our gaze to the
totality of our history and the world at large, we are all
like these persons or have been: we all have something of the wounded
man, something of the robbers, something of those who pass at a distance or
something of the Good Samaritan.
