Opening word
Service is a beautiful virtue
and a lifelong task for every Christian.
It is truly a task
to show humility and service to others.
Jesus tells us today:
‘Whoever wants to become great among you must be a servant to you’.
Let us learn from Him
what it means to be of service
and how we can persevere in it,
even in difficult circumstances.
Let us open ourselves to His presence,
to His Spirit of mercy and compassion.
FIRST READING Isa 53:10-11
He gave his life as an atonement sacrifice but he will see an offspring.
From the prophet Isaiah
The Lord has decided to humble his servant
And to make him suffer.
Truly, he gave his life as a sacrifice of atonement
but he shall see an offspring
and the counsel of the Lord will be fulfilled through him.
After his suffering
he will see the light and be satiated.
Through his toil
My righteous servant will justify many.
He will burden himself with their faults.
Responsorial Ps 33(32), 4-5, 18-19, 20 and 22
Refrain
Let your mercy, Lord, descend upon us.
Sincere is the word of the Lord
and all He does is trustworthy.
law and justice He loves,
the earth is full of His mercy.
The eye of the Lord rests on those who fear Him,
who count on His mercy;
That He will snatch them from death,
In famine feed them.
We put all our hope in the Lord,
He is our help and our shield.
Let your mercy, Lord, descend upon us
As our trust goes out to You.
SECOND READING Hebrews 4, 14-16
Let us approach boldly to the throne of grace.
From the letter to the Hebrews
Brothers and sisters,
Now that we have an exalted high priest,
one who has passed through the heavens,
Jesus, the Son of God,
now we must hold fast to our confession.
For we have a high priest
who is able to sympathise with our weaknesses.
He himself was tested in many ways ,
exactly like us, apart from sin.
Let us therefore boldly approach the throne of God’s mercy,
to obtain mercy and grace
and timely help.
Verse for the gospel Mk. 10, 45
Alleluia.
The Son of Man has come to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mk. 10, 35-45
The Son of Man has come to give his life as a ransom for many.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark
At that time, James and John, the sons of
Zebedee,
came to Jesus and said:
‘Master, we want You to do for us what we ask.’
He answered them:
‘Then what do you want Me to do for you?’
They said to Him:
‘Grant that in Your glory one of us may be at Your right hand
and the other may sit at thy left hand.’
But Jesus said to them:
‘Ye know not what ye ask.
‘Are you able to drink the cup that I drink
and be baptised with the baptism
with which I am baptised?’
They answered Him:
‘Yes, we can.’
‘Indeed.’
-admitted Jesus-
the cup which I drink, ye shall drink ,
and with the baptism with which I am baptised ,
ye shall be baptised;
but it is not for Me
to make thee sit on My right hand or on My left,
because only they obtain this for whom this is prepared.’
When the ten others heard this ,
they became angry with James and John.
Jesus, however, called them to Himself and spoke to them:
‘You know that those who count as rulers of the nations ,
rule them with an iron fist
and that the great ones abuse their power over them.
‘This must not be the case with you;
whoever wishes to become great among you ,
must be a servant of yours,
and whoever wants to be first among you,
must be slave of all,
for even the Son of Man did not come to be served
be served,
but to serve,
and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
72. The parable begins with the robbers. The starting point Jesus chooses is
a robbery that has already taken place. He does not make us pause to
complain about that fact, He does not direct our gaze at the robbers. We know
them. We have seen in the world the dark shadows of abandonment
rising, of violence used for petty interests
of power, accumulation and division in the world. The question
might be: will we leave the injured person to quickly
defend against the violence or pursue the robbers? Will that wounded person
be a vindication of our irreconcilable discord, our cruel
indifference, our mutual strife?
