Consideration
The word ‘hypotassein’ is already used in verse 21 and in a mutual sense. Hence ‘submit to one another’. If one reads it with an open mind and does not lose sight of the whole, it remains a unique text on which to base the sacramentality of Christian marriage. For the light of Christ to shine through, all works of evil must be rejected so that all people can become children of light. This light must have an effect on our relationships, including the marriage relationship between husband and wife. The author sees marriage as a picture of the covenant between Christ and his Church.
FIRST READING Eph 5:21-33
This mystery has deep meaning. I relate it to Christ and the Church.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Ephesus
Brothers and sisters,
Be submissive to one another for the fear of Christ.
Wives, be submissive to your husbands as to the Lord.
For the husband is the head of the wife
as Christ is the head of the church,
He who is also the Saviour of her body;
But as the Church is subject to Christ ,
so also the wife must be submissive to her husband in all things.
Husbands,
love your wife as Christ loved the Church:
He gave Himself for her, to sanctify her,
cleansing her by the bath of water with the word.
He took the church to Himself as a glorious bride,
without spot or wrinkle or blemish,
holy and without blemish.
In the same way, men should love their wives as their own bodies.
As their own bodies.
He who loves his wife loves himself.
No man has ever hated his own flesh,
On the contrary, he nurtures and cares for it.
And Christ does the same with the Church
because we are members of His body.
‘Therefore a man shall leave father and mother
to unite himself to his wife
and the two shall become one flesh.
This secret has deep meaning.
I relate it to Christ and the Church.
But every one must love his wife as he loves his wife.
each must love his wife as himself and the wife must be in awe of her husband.
and the wife should be in awe of her husband.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 128(127), 1-2, 3, 4-5
Blessed are those who fear God.
Blessed are those who fear God,
Go in the way of the Lord.
Thou shalt eat the fruit of thy labour,
happy and prosperous shalt thou be.
Thy wife in thy house
Is like a vine richly laden
And like olive branches around the trunk
So are thy children around thy table.
Yes, so is every man blessed
who honours the Lord.
Bless the Lord from Zion;
May you see Jerusalem prosperous
as long as your days last.
ALLELUIAH 2 Tim. 1, 10b
Alleluia.
Our Saviour Christ Jesus has destroyed death
and raised imperishable life
through the gospel.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 13:18-21
The seed grew and became a great tree.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke
At that time Jesus said :
‘What is the kingdom of God like?
To what shall I compare it?
It is like a mustard seed that someone sowed in his garden;
it grew up and became a great tree
and the birds of the air nest in its branches‘’.
Jesus also said:
‘’To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?
It is like leaven,
hich a woman processed into three measures of flour
until it was fermented in its entirety.”’

ENCYCLIC
From Pope Francis
On brotherhood and social friendship
81. What is proposed is to be present to those who need help,
regardless of whether he or she belongs to the circle
to which one belongs. In this case, it was the Samaritan who
became a neighbour to the wounded Jew. Becoming a neighbour and
be present, he crossed all cultural and historical barriers.
Jesus’ conclusion is a call: “Go and do likewise” (Lk 10.37).
In other words, he asks us to set aside all differences and,
in the face of suffering, be near to everyone.
Therefore, I no longer say that
I have ‘neighbours’ to help, but that I feel called to be a neighbour to the other.
