Consideration
Reflections on the attitude between husband and wife in marriage are followed by rules of conduct for the attitude between parents and children. Relations between masters and slaves are not forgotten either. The emphasis is on the fact that masters and slaves ultimately have the same Master, with whom there are no distinctions.
FIRST READING Eph. 6, 1-9
Not as eye-servants seeking to please men,
but as servants of Christ.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Ephesus
Children, obey your parents ; so be it.
‘Honour thy father and thy mother’,
so reads the first commandment
To which is attached a promise :
‘That ye may prosper and live long on earth.
And you fathers, do not embitter your children
but bring them up with Christian discipline and admonition.
Slaves, obey your earthly masters
with reverence and in simplicity of heart
as if your submission were Christ Himself.
Not as eye-servants seeking to please men
but as servants of Christ,
fulfilling God’s will with all your heart.
Serve the Lord well in men,
knowing that each one will receive back the good he has done
will receive back from the Lord,
whether he is a slave or a free one.
And ye masters, treat them in the same spirit.
Leave behind threats.
Remember that ye have the same Master in heaven as they :
He has no favourites.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 145(144), 10-11, 12-13ab, 13cd-14
True is God in all His words.
Your works shall praise You, Lord,
Your pious ones shall praise You.
They praise the glory of Your rule,
Your power they proclaim.
They make Your power known to men,
the splendour of Your kingdom.
Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages,
your rule is for every generation.
True is God in all his words
and holy in all He does.
The Lord sustains those who are in danger of falling,
raises up all who are troubled.
ALLELUIA Hebrews 4, 12
Alleluia.
The word of God is alive and powerful,
and it penetrates to the touch of soul and spirit.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 13, 22-30
They will come from the east and the west,
and they shall sit down in the kingdom of God.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
In those days Jesus went about
through towns and villages, teaching there
and He continued His journey to Jerusalem.
Someone asked Him :
‘Lord, are there few who are saved?’
But He spoke to them :
‘Strive to the utmost
to enter through the narrow door ,
for, I tell you, many will try to enter
but they will not succeed.
‘Once the householder has risen and closed the door
and then if ye start knocking on the door outside
and begin to cry out : Lord, open up!
He will answer thee : I know not whence thou comest.
‘Then thou shalt raise :
In thy presence we have eaten and drunk ,
and in our streets thou gavest instruction.
‘But again his answer will be :
I know not whence thou art come.
‘Depart from Me, all ye that do iniquity.
‘There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth,
when you shall see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets
shall see in the kingdom of God,
while ye yourselves shall be cast out.
‘They shall come from the east and the west,
from the north and the south,
and they shall sit down in the kingdom of God.
‘Remember :
there are lasts who will be first and firsts who will be last.’

Fratelli tutti
Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
82. The issue is that Jesus explicitly reveals that the wounded man
was a Jew – a native of Judea – while the one who stopped and
helped him, was a Samaritan – a native of Samaria -. This detail is
of great importance when reflecting on a love that opens up to all.
The Samaritans lived in a region where pagan rites were prevalent
and to the Jews this made them unclean, detestable, dangerous. An ancient
Jewish text that mentions nations worthy of contempt refers
indeed to Samaria, saying moreover that ‘it is not
even a nation’ (Sir. 50:25), adding that it is ’the foolish people’
is ‘dwelling in Shechem’ (v. 26).
