Thirty-first Sunday through the year

Invitation

May I draw your attention to
The daily reading of the Gospel

This invitation seeks to convey the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception
can experience that joy by opening his or her heart
to the healing power of the Word of God.

Available every day

Introduction

God is love and loves us above all else.
In every celebration, we are invited
to open our ears to this message.
Let us also open our hearts
so that God’s love can fill it.
In every celebration, we are challenged
to align our lives with God’s love.
Let us love one another in word and deed
and thus share what we have received from God:
a love that knows no bounds.

First reading                       Deut. 6:2-6

Hear, Israel, you must love the Lord your God with all your heart.

From the book of Deuteronomy.

Moses spoke to the people and said:
‘Fear the Lord your God
and keep all his statutes and commandments
which I command you, and your children and grandchildren.
Thus you will live long.
‘Hear therefore, O Israel, and keep them diligently.
‘Then shall ye be happy
and thou shalt be numerous in the land of milk and honey
which the Lord, the God of thy fathers, has promised thee.
‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord alone!

‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul
and with all your strength.
‘The commandments I command you today ,
you must engrave in your hearts. ‘l

Responsorial                       18(17), 2-3, 4-5, 47 and 51ab

Refrain

Lord, I love You, You are my strength.

Lord, I love You, You are my strength
my refuge, my fortress, my deliverer.
My God, my rock where I find refuge,
my shield, my preservation and protection.

When I call on the Lord, may He be praised,
then no enemy will harm me.
For waves of deadly danger surrounded me,
a torrent of calamity terrified me.

Praise be to the Lord, blessed be my rock,
glorified be God my saviour.
For you have given victory to your king
your favours to your anointed one.

SECOND READING              Heb 7, 23-28

Christ’s priesthood is imperishable because it is eternal.

From the letter to the Hebrews

Brothers and sisters,

In the first covenant the superiors had to become priests
because death prevented them from remaining in office;
but the priesthood of Jesus is imperishable
because He remains in eternity.
Therefore, He is also able to save forever those who approach God through His intervention.
Who come to God through His intervention,
because He always lives to intercede for them.

We too need such a high priest:
one who is holy, blameless, without blemish,
separated from sinners,
exalted above the heavens.
Nor does he need, like the high priests, to first offer sacrifices for sinners every day,
offering sacrifices every day first for his own sins
and then for the sins of the people,
for this He did once for all, when He offered Himself
when He sacrificed Himself.
The law appoints men suffering from weakness as high priests;
but the oath pronounced according to the law
appoints the Son, who is perfect for all eternity.

GOSPEL                         Mk 12, 28b-34

There is no other commandment more preeminent than these two.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to

Mark

At that moment a scribe came to Jesus
and asked him
‘Which is the first commandment?

Jesus replied:
‘The first is :
Hear, Israel.
‘The Lord our God is the only Lord.
‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind and all your strength,
and all thy soul and all thy mind and all thy strength.
‘The second is this:
Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
‘There is no other commandment more important than these two.’

Then the scribe said to him:
‘Well master, you have said it well:
He is the only One and there is no other besides Him;
and to love Him with all your heart
all your mind and all your strength
and to love your neighbour as yourself.
That is above all fire and above all chance’.

Seeing that Jesus had spoken wisely, he said to him:
‘You are not far from the Kingdom of God’.
And no one dared to ask him another question.

Fratelli tutti

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

86. It sometimes saddens me that, despite this motivation, the Church has been so
slow to condemn slavery and the various forms of violence.
Today, with the development of
spirituality and theology, we no longer have any excuses. However, there are still people who
believe that their faith encourages or at least empowers them
to condemn various forms of narrow-minded and violent nationalism
xenophobic attitudes, contempt or even mistreatment of dissenters.
those who are different. Faith, with the humanism it inspires, must
keep critical sense alive in the face of these tendencies
and help to react quickly when they begin to manifest themselves.
This is why it is important that catechesis and preaching speak directly and clearly about the social meaning of the Church.
and speak clearly about the social meaning of existence, the fraternal
existence, the fraternal dimension of spirituality, the conviction of the inalienable dignity of each person and the
inalienable dignity of every person and the basis for loving and accepting everyone.
For loving and accepting everyone.
