Consideration
The hymn turns into a regular text, but the atmosphere created with the hymn lingers for a while. The ministering love of Christ is norm for Paul and for all the disciples. Paul lives in captivity, but he also lives it with complete abandon and without grumbling. So too must those who find themselves in trouble in a hostile world. The response psalm hooks up perfectly with this reading.
FIRST READING Phil. 2, 12-18
Make work of your salvation. For it is God who has both
the willing and the doing in you.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Philippi
Brothers and sisters,
Thou hast always listened to me ;
now, therefore, in my absence
with no less earnestness make work of your salvation than when I was with you.
For it is God
who brings about both the will and the doing in you,
to realise his plan of salvation.
Do all you have to do, without murmuring or contradicting.
See to it that you are blameless and untainted,
as blameless children of God
among a devious and degenerate generation,
in which you shine like stars in the universe.
Hold fast the word of life.
Then, when the day of Christ comes, I can be proud of it
That my work and effort have not been in vain.
But even if my blood is shed
at the sacrificial service of your faith,
then I wish myself and all of you happiness.
And ye should be equally happy and share in my joy.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 27(26), 1, 4, 13-14
The Lord is my light and my guide.
The Lord is my light and my guide,
whom should I fear ;
The Lord is the brace of my life,
of whom should I be afraid?
One thing only I ask of the Lord,
more will I not wish:
That I may live in God’s house as long as I live.
That I may experience the loveliness of the Lord,
see his temple again with my own eyes.
During my lifetime I count on
to experience the Lord’s benefits.
Look forward to the Lord and stand firm bravely,
be bold in heart and trust in the Lord.
ALLELUIA Mt 11:25
Alleluia.
I praise Thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth
because You have
have revealed to children.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 14, 25-33
None of you can be my disciple
if he does not detach himself from all that he possesses.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke
When countless people went with Jesus
He turned and said to them :
‘If anyone comes to Me ,
who leaves his father and mother, his wife and children,
his brothers and sisters,
yes even his own life,
he cannot be My disciple.
‘If anyone does not carry his cross and follow Me
he cannot be My disciple.
‘If anyone of you wants to build a tower ,
will he not first
sit down in front of it to make a budget
whether he owns enough to complete it?
‘Otherwise it might happen to him,
– if he has laid the foundation
and is unable to bring the work to completion –
that all who see it will mock him and say :
That man began to build ,
but he was unable to bring the end.
‘Or what king will ,
– if he wants to go to war against another king –
will not first consider whether he is strong enough
to face with ten thousand men
to one who goes up against him with twenty thousand men?
‘If not ,
then, if the opponent is still far away
an envoy and asks for the terms of peace.
‘Thus none of you can be my disciple
if he does not detach himself from all that he possesses.’

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
89. On the other hand, I cannot limit my life to relationships with a
without a broader fabric of relationships: not only the present one
but also what precedes me and has shaped me over the course of my life.
My relationship with a person I value cannot ignore the fact
that that person does not live just for a relationship with me and
nor do I live just to deal with him. If our relationship
is healthy and authentic, it opens us up to others who allow us to grow and enrich ourselves.
The noblest social sentiment today is easily nullified behind selfish intimacies with the appearance of intense relationships.
Instead, love that is authentic helps grow and the
noblest forms of friendship dwell in hearts that allow themselves to be replenished.
The bond of a couple and of friendship aims to open the heart around
itself, to enable us to step outside ourselves to
welcome all. Closed groups and self-involved couples, who
make of themselves an ‘us’ opposed to the whole world, are
usually idealised forms of selfishness and mere self-protection.
