Consideration

Tensions crop up in the church of Rome, which are also recognisable in the Church of our day. Some live the faith according to strict rules and feel upset when others take more freedom. The Jews of Paul’s time abstained from certain foods on certain days. Others interpreted these rules differently, and did not pay much attention to them. Still others were above such discussions and quietly took different paths. Paul will take love as the starting point: it asks all to respect the freedom of conscience of everyone. Let us also deal with each other in our Church from this love: let us tolerate each other, and not point the finger at anyone because of confusion or different views. Incidentalities must remain incidental. The core of our faith is: The death and resurrection of our Lord.

FIRST READING               Phil. 3, 3-8a

All these advantages I have written off and for
Christ’s will I consider everything a loss.

From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Philippi

Brothers and sisters,
We who worship God in the Spirit,
we are the truly circumcised.
We seek our glory in Christ Jesus, not in ourselves.
By the way, I could rightly
human prerogatives.
If others think they can rely on that ,
then I certainly can:
I was circumcised on the eighth day,
of the lineage of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin,
a born and bred Hebrew;
in the matter of the Torah a Pharisee,
in matters of zeal a persecutor of the church,
perfected in legal holiness.
But I have written off all these advantages for Christ’s sake.
Indeed, I consider everything a loss,
because knowing my Lord Christ Jesus
surpasses everything.
For His sake I have given up everything.

INTERLUDIUM                    Ps. 105(104), 2-3, 4-5, 6-7

Rejoice, ye who follow the Lord.
Sing to Him and pluck the strings for Him,
Narrate all His wonderful works.
Go great on the holy Name of the Lord,
rejoice, ye who follow Him.
Abide in Him, in His mighty arm,
always seek His Face.
Never forget the miracles He did,
His signs and His promises.
Ye offspring of His servant Abraham,
ye sons of Jacob, his beloved.
The Lord, He is our only God,
what He decrees applies to all the earth.

ALLELUIA             cf. Lk. 8, 15

Alleluia.
Blessed are those who keep the word of God which they heard,
keep in a good and noble heart
And bring forth fruit by their steadfastness.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                   Lk. 15, 1-10

There is joy among the angels of God
Over one sinner who repents.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

In those days, tax collectors and sinners of all kinds came to Jesus
to listen to Him.
The Pharisees and scribes grumbled over this and said :
‘That man receives sinners and eats with them.’
He held out this parable to them :
‘If anyone among you has a hundred sheep
and loses one of them ,
does he not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness
to look for the lost one
until he finds it ?
‘And when he finds it, he joyfully lays it on his shoulders
and he goes home, calls his friends and neighbours together
and says to them :
Share in my joy,
for my sheep that was lost I have found.
‘I say to you :
So there will be more joy in heaven
over one sinner who repents ,
than over ninety-nine righteous
who need no repentance.
‘Or what woman who possesses ten drachmas and loses one drachma
does not light a lamp,
does not sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it ?
‘And when she has found it ,
she calls her friends and neighbours together and says :
Share in my joy,
for the drachma I had lost I have found.
‘Thus, I say to you, there is joy among the angels of God
over one sinner who repents.’

Fratelli tutti

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

90. It is no accident that many small populations that have survived in certain
desert areas, have developed a generous ability
to welcome passing pilgrims, thus giving an exemplary sign of the sacred duty of hospitality. This
the medieval monastic communities also experienced, as one
encountered in St Benedict’s Rule. Although that made disturbed the order
and silence of the monasteries, Benedict demanded that the poor and
pilgrims to be treated ‘with all possible respect and care’.
Hospitality is a concrete way of not feeling this challenge and this
gift that is an encounter with humanity outside one’s own group, to
deprived. These people recognised that all the values they could cultivate
had to be accompanied by this ability to rise above themselves
in an openness to others.
