the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.

can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day
Consideration
We listen today to a series of recommendations Luther called the Haustafeln, a family code for men and women of various ages. Verse 4 – 5 does look very much like an exhortation at marriage, but verses 11-14 are especially curious. It reappears tomorrow in analogous words and may be a piece of an ancient baptismal liturgy.
FIRST READING Tit. 2, 1-8. 11-14
The grace of God teaches us to live piously in these days,
as we look forward to the blessed fulfilment of our hope,
the revelation of the glory of our great God
and Saviour Jesus Christ.
From the holy apostle Paul’s letter to Titus
Dear one,
Your task is
to proclaim what is consistent with sound doctrine.
Elderly men should be moderate,
grave, pensive,
sound in faith, love and perseverance.
Similarly, elderly women should behave with dignity,
speaking no evil, not being addicted to wine.
They should give good advice
and teach younger women to love their husbands and children,
to be wise, chaste, domestic,
kind, submissive to their husbands ;
then the word of God will not be compromised.
Also urge the young men to always be wise.
Give them a good example themselves.
Let your teaching be honest and serious,
your preaching be wholesome and unassailable.
Then the adversary will know nothing evil to say of us
and he may come to other thoughts.
For the grace of God,
source of salvation for all men,
has appeared on earth.
It teaches us to renounce wickedness and worldly lusts
and to live thoughtfully, righteously and piously in this age,
as we look forward to the blessed fulfilment of our hopes,
the revelation of the glory
of our great God and Saviour Christ Jesus.
He has given himself for us
to redeem us from all iniquity
and to make us His own people,
cleansed from sin,
full of zeal for all good.
INTERLUDIUM Ps 37(36), 3-4, 18, 23, 27, 29
The salvation of the pious comes from the Lord.
Trust in the Lord and do what is right,
then thou shalt inhabit thy land safely.
Seek your happiness from the Lord,
He gives what your heart desires.
The Lord cares for the lives of the pious,
their inheritance remains together forever.
Man’s step gets its strength from God,
his way is guarded by the Lord.
Stay far from evil and do what is right,
then you may live here forever.
The righteous shall possess the land
and inhabit it forever.
ALLELUIA Phil. 2, 15-16
Alleluia.
Shine like stars in the universe,
and hold fast the word of life.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 17, 7-10
We are useless servants ;
we have only done our duty.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
At that time Jesus spoke :
‘Which of you shall speak to the servant
whom he employs as a ploughman or herdsman
on his coming home from the land say :
Come immediately to the table and grope?
‘Will he not rather say :
Prepare my meal ;
gird yourself and serve me while I eat and drink ;
after that you can eat and drink yourself ?
‘Should he sometimes be grateful to that servant
because he has carried out what he was told to do ?
‘So is it with thee :
When thou hast done all that thou art commanded ,
then say : We are useless servants;
we have only done our duty.’

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
The growing openness of love
95. Love ultimately makes us strive for universal communion.
No one matures or attains their own fullness by isolating themselves.
By virtue of its own dynamics, love requires a
growing openness, a greater capacity to welcome the other in a
never-ending adventure that brings all peripheries together in a full
awareness of mutual connection. Jesus said to us:
‘You are all brothers’ (Mat 23:8).
