and died in 1280. He was elevated to church teacher in 1931.

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration

A small note, no bigger than a papyrus leaf but with the same basic ideas as the fourth gospel and the first letter of John: the reality of the incarnation. Apparently, this bothered many in the first century. Hence this emphasis. The Gnostic movements in particular expected salvation and redemption from extraordinary knowledge and initiation. Here it reads differently. What good is knowing if doing (love) is absent?

FIRST READING             2 John 4-9
He who abides by that teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.

From the second letter of the holy apostle John

Dear ones,
I was very happy
to have met some of your children
who live in truth according to the commandment
which we have received from the Father.
And now I pray you,
– and it is not a new commandment that I am writing to you about
but the commandment we have had from the beginning –
let us love one another.
And in this love consists
That we live a life according to his commandments.
And this is the commandment
as ye have heard from the beginning :
That ye live in love.
For many seducers have gone forth into the world ;
they deny the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh.
This is the characteristic of the tempter and the antichrist.
Take heed
lest, instead of receiving the full wages
lose the fruits of your labour.
All who will go too far,
and does not abide by the teachings of Christ
does not have God.
Whoever abides by that teaching ,
he has both the Father and the Son.

INTERLUDIUM                     Ps 119(118), 1, 2, 10, 11, 17, 18

Happy those who go forth according to the law of the Lord.
Happy those whose way of life is pure,
who continue according to the law of the Lord.
Happy who heed what He decrees,
seeking Him with all their hearts.
With all my heart I turn to You ;
let me not depart from Your commandments.
Your judgments I store deep in my heart
Not to do wrong against Thee.
Grant thy servant that he may live,
then I will always keep Your word.
Open my eyes to behold
the glory of Your law.

ALLELUIA                  2 Thess. 2, 14

Alleluia.
God has called us
through the proclamation of the gospel,
that we might obtain the glory
of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL             Lk. 17, 26-37

So shall it be
on the day when the Son of Man reveals himself.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples :
‘As it was in the days of Noah
so shall it be also in the days of the Son of Man.
‘They ate and drank, married and were given in marriage
until the day when Noah entered the ark
and the flood came which destroyed all.
‘Or as it was in the days of Lot :
they ate and drank, bought and sold,
planted and built,
but on the day Lot departed from Sodom
it rained from heaven burning sulphur which destroyed all ;
so will it be
on the day when the Son of Man reveals himself.
‘Whoever is on the roof that day
While his possessions are indoors ,
must not come down to fetch them ;
And so whoever is in the land should not return.
‘Remember Lot’s wife.
‘Whoever tries to save his life will lose it
and whoever loses it will preserve it.
‘I say to you : if in that night two are in bed ,
one will be taken and the other left behind.
‘If two women are engaged in grinding together
one will be taken away and the other left behind.
When the disciples thereupon asked Him :
‘Where, Lord?’
He answered them :
‘Where the corpse lies, there the vultures will gather.’

Fratelli tutti

Encyclical of

Pope Francis

On brotherhood and social friendship

98. I want to recall the ‘hidden exiles’ who are
treated as foreign objects in society. Very many people
with disabilities ‘feel that they exist without belonging
and participating’. There are still many things ‘that prevent them from full citizenship’.
The aim is not only to assist them, but to encourage their
‘active participation in the civic and church community. It is a
demanding and also arduous path, which will increasingly contribute to the
formation of consciences capable of recognising each one as a unique person’.
Similarly, I think of the elderly ‘who sometimes, also
because of their disability feel a burden’. All, however, ‘through their
own original biography a special contribution to the common
well-being’. I take the liberty of emphasising: we must ‘have the
courage to give a voice to all those who, because of their disability
are discriminated, because unfortunately in some countries even
today still difficult to recognise them as persons of equal
dignity’.
