Saturday – St Margarita of Scotland – St Gertrudis of Helfta, virg. – Our Lady on Saturday

H. Gertrudis of Helfta
Christian mystic
Lived from 1256 – c. 1302

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration

Reflecting on the three letters of John, we see a Church struggling towards the end of the second century to preserve its identity and draw clear lines of doctrine. Authority works with persuasion rather than authoritarianism, and the primacy of love in particular is strongly emphasised.

FIRST READING                 3 Jn 5-8

It is our duty to support the cause of truth
by receiving the brethren.

From the third letter of the holy apostle John

Dear one,
Thou dost render faithful service to the brethren
even though they are strangers to thee.
They have therefore before the congregation
of thy love.
You do well to equip them for the further journey
in a manner worthy of God.
For for the sake of the Name they have set out on the road
without taking anything from the pagans.
It is our duty to support the cause of truth
by welcoming such men hospitably.

INTERLUDIUM                          Ps. 112(111), 1-2, 3-4, 5-6

Happy the man who is in awe of God.

Happy the man who is in awe of God,
who finds joy in his commandments.
His offspring will be mighty in the land,
blessed shall be the generation of the pious.
Prosperity and wealth adorn his house,
he will never lose his righteousness.
He is to the pious a light in the night,
beneficent, merciful, righteous.
Well goes the man who gives away and borrows,
who honestly manages his affairs.
In eternity the righteous stands strong,
he is remembered forever.

ALLELUIA            2 Tim. 1, 10b

Alleluia.
Our Saviour Christ Jesus has destroyed death,
and lit up imperishable life
through the gospel.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                               Lk. 18, 1-8

Would not God provide justice for his chosen people
who cry out to Him day and night ?

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

At that time Jesus taught his disciples a parable
That they should always pray and not falter in it.
He said :
‘Once upon a time in a certain city there was a judge
who cared neither for God nor for commandment.
‘There was also a widow in that city
who repeatedly came to him requesting :
Give me justice towards my opponent.
‘For a while that judge would not ,
but then he said to himself :
Though I care for neither God nor commandment,
still I will give that widow justice
no longer to be plagued
by her endless visits.’
And the Lord spoke :
‘Hear what the unjust judge says!
‘Would not God then provide justice to His chosen ones
who cry out to Him day and night ,
or will He remain impassive towards them?
‘I say to you : He will soon provide justice to them.
‘But : will the Son of Man at his coming
find faith on earth ?’

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

An inadequate understanding of universal love

99. Love that extends beyond borders has as its basis
what we call ‘social friendship’ in every city and in every country.
When it is real, this social friendship within a society is
a prerequisite for true universal openness. It does not concern the
false universalism of those who need to travel constantly because
he neither tolerates nor loves his own people. He who looks at his people with
contempt, establishes in his own society categories of the
first and second class, of people with more or less dignity and
rights. Thus he denies space for all.
