Thirty-third sunday through the year

Boek met kaars 40

Invitation
May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

Opening word

At the end of the liturgical year, it is autumn.
We notice then that everything on earth
is finite, fragile and impermanent.
Today Jesus tells us:
‘Heaven and earth will pass away,
but my words will not pass away’.
Jesus’ words give courage and confidence,
even as we face death.
His words bring light into the darkness
and bestow hope where despair reigns.
Let us feed on his Word in this hour.

FIRST READING               Dan. 12, 1-3
In those days your people will be saved.

From the prophet Daniel

In those days the great prince Michael will arise
to protect the children of your people.
For it will then be a time of distress
such as there has not been before
since there have been nations.
But all those of your people who are recorded in the book,
will be saved in that time.
And many of those who sleep in the dust ,
shall awake, some to live forever,
others to suffer the reproach of an eternal disgrace
experience.
Then the wise will shine like the radiance of the firmament
and those who have brought men to righteousness,
will shine like the stars forever and ever.

RESPONSORIAL                   Ps. 16(15), 5 and 8, 9-10, 11

Refrain

Protect me, God, to You I take refuge.
The Lord is my inheritance, my drink from the cup,
He holds my fate in His hand.
Always I keep my eyes fixed on the Lord,
I do not fall, for He is beside me.
Therefore I am calm and glad in heart
And without care my mind is,
my body can rest safely.
My soul Thou dost not leave to the kingdom of the dead,
Thou wilt not abandon Thy servant to corruption.
Thou wilt show me the way of life
To find all my joy with Thee,
everlasting happiness at Thy side.

SECOND READING                    Hebrews 10, 11-14.18
By one sacrifice He has brought to perfection those who are sanctified.

From the letter to the Hebrews

Brothers and sisters,
Every priest performs the service standing daily
and recites again and again the same sacrifices
that can never take away sins.
Christ, on the other hand
is seated forever at the right hand of God
having offered a single sacrifice for sins,
and He is only waiting for the moment
when His enemies
be made a footstool for His feet.
For by one sacrifice He has forever
brought to perfection those who allow themselves to be sanctified.
And where sins and iniquities are forgiven,
there is no more need for a peace offering.

Verse for the Gospel                Lk 21, 36

Alleluia.
Be vigilant at all times and pray
that you may stand firm
before the Son of Man.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                     Mk 13:24-32
He will gather his elect from the four winds.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
‘After the terrors in those days
the sun will darken
and the moon will no longer give light
and the stars shall fall from heaven
and the heavenly hosts will be in confusion.
‘Then they shall see the Son of Man coming on the clouds
With great power and glory.
Then He will send forth His angels
to gather His elect from the four winds,
from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
‘From the comparison with the fig tree, draw this lesson:
When the twigs are already softening
and begin to bone out,
thou knowest that summer is coming.
‘Likewise, when ye see all these things ,
know then that the end is near,
yea at the door.
‘Verily, I say unto you:
this generation shall not pass away until all this is done.
‘Heaven and earth shall pass away
but My words shall not pass away.
‘Of that day or hour no one knows,
not even the angels in heaven,
not even the Son,
but the Father alone.’

Fratelli tutti

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

100 Nor do I propose an authoritarian and abstract universalism,
dictated or planned by a few and presented as an alleged
ideal with the aim of homogenising, dominating and plundering. There is
a model of globalisation that ‘consciously strives for one-dimensional
uniformity and seeks to eliminate all differences and traditions in a
superficial search for unity. […] If a globalisation pretends to
make all equal, as if it were a sphere, this globalisation destroys the
individuality of every person and people’. This false universalist
dream ultimately robs the world of the diversity of
its colours, its beauty and finally its humanity.
For ‘the future is not “monochrome”, but if we have the courage,
it is possible to look at it in the variety and diversity
of the contributions each one can make. How much does our
human family to learn to live together in harmony and peace
without us all having to be the same!’.
