Consideration

The lamb (Christ) broke the seven seals that held the scroll closed. Certain secrets of God were unveiled and a number of disasters happened. Now what is that little book? It refers to Ezekiel 2.8-3.3. Eating it means that we are not just passive spectators of the message but we have to make that message all our own. That message is sweet because it is a message from God, but also bitter because witnessing does not happen without many difficulties. In fact, the last sentence teaches us that we are preparing for a tremendous confrontation between the message of the gospel and the anti-godly power of the Roman empire (Babylon).

FIRST READING                 Apok. 10, 8-11
I took the book and I ate it.

From the revelation of the holy apostle John

I, John, heard the voice
which I had heard from heaven, speaking to me again :
‘Go, take the opened book
which is in the hand of the angel
who stands on the sea and on the land.’
And I went to the angel and asked him to give me the book.
And he said :
‘Take it and eat it.
‘It will be bitter in your body
but in your mouth sweet as honey.’
And I took the booklet from the angel’s hand
And I ate it.
And it tasted in my mouth sweet as honey
but when I had swallowed it, bitterness filled my body.
Then I was told :
‘Thou must prophesy again
over many peoples and nations and languages and kings.’

INTERLUDIUM                 Ps 118, 14, 24, 72, 103, 111, 131

How deliciously your promises taste to me,
like honey they are in my mouth.
My joy I find in what You ordain,
that is my richest possession.
I take Your decrees to heart,
they give me good advice.
The law from Thy mouth is worth more to me
than treasures of silver and gold.
How deliciously your promises taste to me,
like honey they are in my mouth.
My inheritance is always what You ordain,
that is the joy of my heart.
I open my mouth panting,
so I yearn for Thy commandment.

ALLELUIA                   Ps. 119(118), 18

Alleluia.
Open my eyes to behold, Lord,
the glory of your law.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                 Lk. 19:45-48

My house should be a house of prayer,
but thou hast made it a den of robbers.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

At that time Jesus entered the temple
and began to chase out the vendors
As He said to them:
‘It is written :
My house must be a house of prayer ,
but ye have made it a den of robbers.’
Daily, He taught in the temple.
The high priests, the scribes
and the leading figures of the people
were looking for an opportunity to put Him to death ,
but they saw no opportunity to do anything,
for all the people were hanging on His every word.

Fratelli tutti

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

105. Individualism does not make us freer, more equal, more fraternal. Only
the sum of individual interests is incapable of creating a better world for the
entire humanity. Nor can it save us from so much
evil that is becoming increasingly global. But radical individualism is the
most difficult virus to defeat. It deceives. It makes us believe that
everything consists in giving free rein to our own ambitions, as if by
piling up personal ambitions and certainties we could build the common
well-being .
