Thirty-fourth Sunday of the year – Christ, King of the Universe

The liturgy of ‘Christ, King of the Universe’ emphasises Jesus’ role
as ruler of creation in the new system of salvation

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

Opening word

Christ is the King of the universe.
Yet his kingship is often misunderstood.
He is a humble and serving king
who puts the poor and those in need first.
On the high feast of Christ-King
we pray for hope for young people who look forward
for an encouraging word or a listening ear.
Christ gives them the confidence and strength
to help build his kingdom with their talents.
Let us support them in this task
and pray for them in this hour.

FIRST READING                  Dan. 7, 13-14
His reign is an everlasting reign.

From the prophet Daniel

At that time Daniel took the floor and said:
‘In my nightly vision I saw with the clouds of heaven
someone coming who looked like a man.
‘He went to the Most High and was led before him.
‘Then he was given dominion,
glory and royal power;
all nations, tribes and languages paid homage to him.
‘His dominion is an everlasting dominion that never
perish,
his kingdom never perishes.’

RESPONSORIAL.                   93(92), 1ab, 1c-2.5

Refrain

The Lord is king, clothed with splendour.

The Lord is king, clothed with splendour,
with power the Lord has girded himself.
As firm as the earth, unshakable,
so firm is thy throne through the ages,
from eternity, God, art Thou.
Reliable is all that Thou dost testify,
thy house be holy forever.

SECOND READING                     Apok. 1, 5-8
The Prince of the kings of the earth has made us a kingdom of priests to God.

From the Revelation of the holy apostle John

Grace be to you from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness,
the firstborn from the dead
and prince of the kings of the earth.
To Him who loves us
and who redeemed us from sin by his blood,
who made us a kingdom of priests
To his God and Father,-
To Him be glory and power throughout the ages of ages!
Amen.
Behold, He is coming with the clouds
and every eye shall behold Him,
even they that pierced Him;
And all the tribes of the earth shall lament over Him.
Yes, Amen!
‘I am the Alpha and the Omega ,
– says God the Lord –
He who is and who was and who is to come,
the Omnipotent One.’

Verse for the gospel           Mk 11, 10

Alleluia.
Blessed the Coming One in the name of the Lord.
Praised the coming kingdom of our father David!
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                  John 18, 33b-37
Thou sayest that I am king.

From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John

At that time Pilate called Jesus to him and said to him:
‘Art thou the king of the Jews?’
Jesus answered him:
‘Sayest thou this of thyself
or have others spoken to thee concerning Me?’
Pilate replied:
‘Am I sometimes a Jew?
‘Thy own people and the high priests
have handed Thee over to Me.
‘What hast Thou done?’
Jesus answered:
‘My kingship is not of this world.
‘Would my kingship be of this world
then My servants would have fought to ensure
that I was not delivered to the Jews.
‘My kingship, however, is not of this world.’
Pilate resumed:
‘So thou art king after all?’
Jesus replied:
‘Yes, king I am.
‘To this end was I born
and for this purpose I came into the world
To bear witness to the truth.
‘All who are of the truth listen to My voice.’

Fratelli tutti

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

107. Every human being has the right to live with dignity and
to develop integrally, and no country may deny this fundamental
right. Everyone possesses it, even if he is ineffective,
even if he is born or raised with limitations; for this does not diminish
not his immense dignity as a human person, which is not based
on circumstances, but on the value of his being. When this
elementary principle is not guaranteed, there is no future for the
brotherhood nor for the survival of humanity.
