OPENING WORD
This Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of joy:
Joy because the Messiah is now very near,
joy with the Father who rejoices in each one of us,
joy with us as a testimony of our baptism with the Holy Spirit,
joy for all our brothers and sisters with whom we are united
in this celebration in which our solidarity is asked for the action of Welfare.
Open our hearts to that joy and pray for God’s mercy.
FIRST READING Seph. 3, 14-18a
The Lord will rejoice exuberantly for you.
From the Prophet Sephaniah
Zion, rejoice for joy,
rejoice, Israel,
rejoice and be glad, Jerusalem,
with all your heart!
The judgment that pressed upon you ,
was destroyed by the LORD,
He has driven out your enemy.
The LORD, the King of Israel, remains with you:
now ye need fear no more mischief!
On that day it will be said to Jerusalem:
Fear not, Zion,
and let not thy hands be slack.
The LORD thy God is with thee
as a saving hero.
Extremely He rejoices over you,
by his love he makes you new;
He rejoices over you with joy.
RESPONSORIAL Isa 12, 2-3, 4bcd, 5-6
Keervers
Rejoice and rejoice,
For great is the Lord in your midst.
The Lord is my strength, Him I praise,
He has brought me salvation.
Rejoice you will draw water
from the springs of salvation.
Glorify the Lord, call upon His Name;
Make His deeds known to the peoples,
remember how exalted His Name is.
Praise the Lord for his matchless work,
let all the earth know.
Rejoice and rejoice, who inhabit Zion,
for Israel’s Holy One, great in thy midst.
SECOND READING Phil. 4, 4-7
The Lord is near.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of
Philippi
Brothers and sisters,
Rejoice in the Lord at all times.
Again: rejoice!
Your kindness should be known to all people.
The Lord is near.
Be unconcerned.
Let all your desires be known to God in prayer and supplication,
and never without thanksgiving.
And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding,
will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Verse for the Gospel Isa 61:1(cf. Lk 4:18)
Alleluia.
The Spirit of the Lord has come upon me,
He has sent me to bring to the poor
the Good News.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 3, 10-18
What are we to do?
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
In those days, people asked John the question:
‘What must we do?’
John gave them in answer:
‘Whoever has double garments, let him share
With him who has nothing,
and whoever has food, let him do the same.’
There also came tax collectors to be baptised
and they asked him:
‘Master, what should we do?’
He said to them:
‘Do not ask for more than has been set for you.’
Soldiers also questioned him:
‘And what should we do?’
He replied:
‘not plunder anyone, not extort anything from anyone,
but be satisfied with your pay.’
Because the people were full of expectation
and everyone was wondering concerning John
whether he would not be the Messiah,
John gave the answer to all:
‘I baptise you with water, but someone is coming
who is stronger than me;
I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals.
‘He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
‘The winnow He has in His hand
To thoroughly purify His threshing floor
and gather His wheat into His barn,
but the chaff He will burn in unquenchable fire.’
Thus and with many other admonitions
John proclaimed to the people the Good News.

On brotherhood and social friendship
128. If the conviction that as human beings we are all brothers and sisters
are not just something abstract, but takes on hands and feet and becomes concrete,
it presents us with a series of challenges that set us in motion,
obliging us to face new perspectives and
new answers.
