Consideration

The letter of Hebrews was written to encourage Christians in tribulation. It calls for courage and faithfulness in difficult moments. In that sense, it does apply to any time. Paul is certainly not the author. Style and teaching are too different. Many hypotheses and names have been put forward. The wise Origenes said, Only God knows. The salutation is very beautiful and reminiscent of John’s prologue.

FIRST READING             Hebrews 1, 1-6
At the end of time, God has spoken to us through the Son.

From the letter to the Hebrews

Brothers and sisters,
After God in former times
many times and in many ways
had spoken to our fathers through the prophets,
He has now, at the end of time
spoken to us through the Son,
whom He has made heir of all that exists
and through whom He created the universe.
He is the reflection of God’s glory
and the image of His being.
He upholds all things by His mighty word.
And having accomplished the cleansing of sins
He has prostrated Himself
to the right of the majesty on high,
far exalted above the angels,
as He also surpasses them
in the dignity that has become His portion.
Did God ever say to an angel :
‘Thou art my Son ;
I have begotten thee this day ?’ Or :
‘I will be a father to Him and He will be my son ?’
However, when He
leads the Firstborn again into the world, He says 😐
‘All the angels of God must pay homage to Him.’

INTERLUDIUM            Ps. 97(96), 1, 2b, 6, 7c, 9

Before the Lord all the gods prostrate themselves.
The Lord is king, the earth may rejoice,
glad are the lands around the sea,
law and justice bear his throne.
The heavens proclaim his holiness
and all nations behold His glory,
before Him all the gods prostrate themselves.
For all the earth is under His power,
He is the highest of the gods.

ALLELUIA             1 Sam. 3, 9 ; John 6, 69b

Alleluia.
Speak Lord, your servant listens ;
your words are words of eternal life.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL                 Mk. 1, 14-20
Repent and believe in the Good News.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark

After John the Baptist had been captured
Jesus went to Galilee
and proclaimed God’s Good News there.
He said :
‘The time is fulfilled and the Kingdom of God is at hand ;
Repent and believe in the Good News.’
Once when Jesus was walking along the Sea of Galilee
He saw Simon and Simon’s brother, Andrew,
as they were busy casting out the net into the lake ;
for they were fishermen.
Jesus spoke to them :
‘Come, follow Me ;
I will make you fishers of men.’
Immediately they abandoned their nets and followed Him.
Going a little further, He saw James, the son of Zebedee,
with his brother John ;
they too were in the boat preparing their nets.
Immediately He called them.
They left their father Zebedee
with the day labourers in the boat and followed Him.

Fratelli tutti
Encyclical of
Pope Francis
On Fraternity and Social Friendship

157. The assumption that populism can serve as a key to the
interpretation of social reality contains another weakness: the
the fact that it denies the legitimacy of the concept of the people.
The attempt to make this category from the language would lead to the word
‘democracy’ (government by the people) itself to be eliminated. To affirm
that society is more than just the sum of individuals, nevertheless
the term ‘people’ is necessary. The reality is that there are social
phenomena that structure majorities, that there are mega-tendencies
and common aspirations; moreover, in addition to the
differences, one can think of common goals to achieve together a shared
project; finally, it is difficult to plan something big for the long
plan, if one does not manage to make it a collective
dream. All this finds its expression in the noun
noun ‘people’ and the adjective ‘popular’. If one
would not include these – along with a thorough critique of demagogy –
one would abandon a fundamental aspect of social reality.
