Consideration

For whom is this letter of Hebrews intended? The text says much more about the author than the addressees. The author is steeped in the O.T. and quotes from it constantly. Both yesterday and today, for instance. In fact, today’s reading is a continuation. God speaks in many ways: Through His messengers, His prophets (yesterday) or angels (today) but uniquely He has expressed Himself in His Son, who surpasses all. For a short time (the time of His human life) He seemed far below the angels. Now He is exalted above all in glory. This thought of Jesus’ glory will recur regularly throughout the book.

FIRST READING                  Hebrews 2, 5-12
Was it not fitting that God the captain who saves us
not than through suffering brought to completion?

From the letter to the Hebrews

Brothers and sisters,
It is certain
that God has not given angels dominion
over the world of the future, which is actually our subject.
Here is the statement in force that we read in Scripture :
‘What is man that Thou dost remember him and
the child of man that Thou dost look upon him ?
‘Thou hast set him a short time below the angels.
‘Thou hast crowned him with glory and honour.
‘Thou hast subjected everything to him
And laid it at his feet.’
That God subjected all things to man,
means, of course, that nothing is exempt from this.
In fact, however, we do not yet see
that all things are subject to Him.
But we do see how Jesus
who for a short time had been put below the angels
is now crowned with glory and honour,
because He conquered death.
By God’s grace, His dying came to benefit all.
God,
ultimate goal and origin of all things,
wants to lead many children to heavenly glory;
it was therefore fitting
that He brought their captain and saviour
through suffering to the consummation.
For He who sanctifies
and those who are sanctified have one and the same origin ;
therefore He also does not shrink from
calling them His brethren when He says :
‘I will proclaim your name to my brethren
and sing your praise in the midst of the congregation.’

INTERLUDIUM                    Ps. 8, 2a, 5, 6-7, 8-9

All thy creation
Thou hast subjected to man.
Lord, our Lord,
how awesome is thy Name on earth.
Ah, what is man then, that Thou carest for him,
the child of man, that Thou dost so care for him?
Not much less than an angel hast Thou created him,
clothed him with beauty and splendour;
all Thy creation subject to him,
laid everything at his feet.
Cattle and sheep everywhere,
also the wild animals in the fields;
birds in the sky and fish in the sea,
all that teems in the oceans.

ALLELUIA              Ps. 19(18), 9

Alleluia.
Your precepts, Lord, are trustworthy,
ignorant they make wise.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL            Mk. 1, 21-28
Jesus taught as one in authority.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark

At that time Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum,
and on the next Sabbath He went to the synagogue
where He acted as a teacher.
The people were beside themselves with amazement at His teaching,
for He was not teaching them like scribes
but as one in authority.
There was in their synagogue precisely a man
who was in the power of an unclean spirit
and began to shout loudly :
‘Jesus of Nazareth, what hast Thou to do with us?
‘Thou hast come to plunge us into ruin.|‘I know who Thou art : The Holy One of God.’
Jesus added to him :
‘Be silent and depart from him.’
The unclean spirit shook him to and fro,
gave another loud cry and left him.
All were so amazed that they asked among themselves :
‘What does that mean anyway?
‘A new teaching with authority !
‘He commands the unclean spirits and they obey Him.’
Quickly his fame spread in all directions
all over the region of Galilee.

Fratelli tutti
Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship

158. After all, there is a misunderstanding. ‘People are not a logical
category, nor a mystical one, if we understand it in the sense that
everything the people do is good, or in the sense that the people are an angelic
category. But no! It is a mythical category. […] When you
explain what a people is, you use logical categories, because you have to
explain; sure, they are necessary. But that’s not how you explain the feeling of
belonging to a people. The word people has something more that cannot be logically
explained. To belong to a people is to be part of
a common identity consisting of social and cultural
ties. And this is not something automatic; on the contrary, it is a slow
difficult process … towards a common project’.
