Consideration

We have a beautiful resumé of who Christ is for us. He shared our existence. He came to be by our side. As high priest, He was bridge between God and man and could defend our interests with God. Through His obedience in suffering and death, He was glorified and broke through our hopeless situation. The way to God and to life with God, beyond death, is now open to us.

FIRST READING           Hebrews 2, 14-18
Jesus had to become like his brothers in everything.

From the letter to the Hebrews

Brothers and sisters,
The children of one family
share in the same flesh and blood ;
Therefore Jesus wanted to share our existence,
in order that through his death
to dethrone the prince of death, the devil
and to free those who, through the fear of death
were subject to unfreedom all their lives.
For it is not the angels He attracts
but the descendants of Abraham.
Hence He had to become like His brethren in everything,
so that as a compassionate and faithful high priest
look after their interests with God
and atone for the sins of the people.
Because He Himself endured the test of suffering ,
He can help all who are tried.

INTERLUDIUM            Ps. 105(104), 1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8-9

Forever God’s covenant remains in force.
Or : Alleluia.
Glorify the Lord and worship His Name,
Proclaim to the nations His deeds.
Sing to Him and pluck the strings for Him,
recount all His wondrous works.
Be proud of the holy Name of the Lord,
rejoice, ye who follow Him.
Abide in Him, in His mighty arm,
ever seek His Face.
Ye offspring of His servant Abraham,
ye sons of Jacob, his beloved.
The Lord, He is our only God,
what He decrees applies to all the earth.
For ever and ever His covenant remains in force,
which He has promised for a thousand generations.
The covenant He made with Abraham before,
the oath He once swore to Isaac.

ALLELUIA            Ps. 25 (24), 4c, 5a

Alleluia.
Teach me to know your paths, Lord ;
Lead me according to your word.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL             Mk. 1, 29-39
Many who suffered from all kinds of diseases were healed by Jesus.

From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark

At that time
Jesus came out of the synagogue,
and went with James and John
to the house of Simon and Andrew.
Simon’s mother-in-law was bedridden with fever ;
they immediately spoke to Him about her.
Jesus went to her,
took her by the hand and made her get up ;
she became free of fever and ministered to them.
In the evening, after sunset,
they brought all those who were suffering or possessed to Him.
All the city flocked at the door.
Many suffering from all kinds of diseases He healed
and He drove out numerous spirits,
but He did not allow the evil spirits to speak,
because they knew Him.
Early, still deep in the night, He got up,
went outside and went to a lonely place
where He continued to pray.
Simon and his companions came after Him
and when they had found Him they said :
‘Everyone is looking for You.’
He answered them :
‘Let us go somewhere else,
to the villages in the circumference,
that I may preach there also.
‘For to this end I have gone forth.’
He travelled throughout Galilee,
preached in their synagogues
and drove out the evil spirits.

Fratelli tutti
Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On Brotherhood and social friendship

159. There are popular leaders who are capable of understanding the feelings of a people,
its cultural dynamics and the major trends of a society
interpret. The service they render by bringing together and leading
can be the basis for a sustainable process of change and growth, which
also includes the ability to make way for others in seeking
the common good. But that degenerates into unhealthy populism,
when it turns into someone’s dexterity to garner consent
for the purpose of politically instrumentalising a people’s culture under whatever ideological
flag to be politically instrumentalised in the service of one’s
personal project and someone’s maintenance of power. Other times, it is aimed
to amass popularity by appealing to the lowest and most selfish
tendencies of some sections of the population. This becomes
even worse when, in gross or subtle forms, it becomes a subjugation
of institutions and the rule of law.
