Considerationn
In Christ, we belong together. When Christians are divided among themselves, the message of the gospel cannot be heard sufficiently. How can we respond to the new challenges of our society, especially those of secularisation and mutual alienation between cultures, if we do not pool the gifts the Holy Spirit has entrusted to each of the Christian traditions? How can we pass on the peace of Christ to all and be divided ourselves? Let us stop wasting so much energy on divisions between Christians, sometimes even within our own confession! Let us gather more often in the presence of God, in listening to the Word, in silence and in praise.
(Brother Alois of Taizé, A call for reconciliation between Christians)
FIRST READING Hebrews 4, 12-16|
Let us confidently approach the throne of God’s grace.
From the letter to the Hebrews
Brothers and sisters,
God’s word is alive and powerful.
It is sharper than a two-edged sword
and penetrates to the core of soul and spirit,
and of the joints and marrow.
It dissects man’s intentions and thoughts.
No creature is hidden from him,
everything is open and exposed before His eyes.
To Him we must give account.
Now that we have an exalted high priest,
one who has passed through the heavens,
Jesus, the Son of God,
we must now hold fast to our confession.
For we have a high priest
who can sympathise with our weaknesses.
He Himself has been tested in many ways,
just like us, without sin.
Let us therefore go boldly to the throne of mercy.
To the throne of God’s mercy,
that we may receive mercy and grace
and timely help.
INTERLUDIUM Ps 19(18), 8, 9, 10, 15
Your words, O Lord, are spirit and life (John 6:64b).|
The law of the Lord is perfect
He strengthens the uncertain spirit.
His precepts are trustworthy,
it makes the ignorant wise.
Legitimate are all His commandments,
satisfying to the mind.
Clear as crystal are His commandments
They are light to the eyes.
The word of the Lord is right
It remains eternally true.
His judgements are true
Righteous in all matters.
May all my words and all my thoughts
be acceptable to You, O Lord,
to You, my rock and redeemer.
HALLELUYA Ps. 111(110), 8ab
Alleluia.
The Lord’s work is good and trustworthy,
what He decides remains steadfast.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mk 2, 13-17
I have not come to call the righteous
but to call sinners.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark
Once Jesus went to the lakeside.
All the people came to Him and He taught them.
As He passed by, He saw Levi
the son of Alphaeus, who was sitting in the toll house, and He spoke to him:
‘Follow me’.
The man got up and followed Him.
While Jesus was staying in Levi’s house
there were with him and his disciples
a large number of tax collectors and sinners,
For there were many who followed him.
The Pharisee scribes saw
That He was eating with sinners and tax collectors,
And they said to His disciples
‘How can He eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?
Jesus heard this and answered them :
‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners .
But to call sinners’.

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
162. The big theme is work. What really belongs to the people – because it promotes the
well-being of the people – is to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to
germinate the seeds that God has put in each of them, to let their abilities, their
initiative, their strengths to germinate. That is the best help for the
best path to a dignified existence. That is why I insist that
‘helping the poor with money should always be a temporary solution to cope with emergencies.
The real goal should always be to
give them a dignified existence through work,
change, policies should not abandon the objective of
the organisation of a society to ensure that everyone
has a way to contribute their own skills and their own
contribution. After all, there is no worse poverty than the poverty
that deprives people of work and their own income.
and the dignity of work’.
In a truly developed society, work is an indispensable dimension
of social life, because it is not only a way to earn a living,
but also a means for personal growth, to establish healthy relationships, to express oneself, to share
relationships, to express oneself, to share one’s gifts,
to feel co-responsible, to ultimately live as a people.
