Consideration
Over five chapters, Mark has recounted how Jesus dealt with his disciples, his family, his adversaries, with the sick and sinful. Today it is up to the disciples to go out and begin their apostolate. Living in communion with Christ, witnessing to their Master in the world, spreading the word, driving out evil, healing the sick: this is their mission.
One who is sent by the Lord is not an advertiser for a promising product. It is someone who is working for a more humane society, for a just world, for a better life for all. These are the signs that announce God’s Kingdom. Where do I stand? To what am I sent, and how do I fulfil this mission?
FIRST READING Hebrews 12:18-19,21-24
Thou art come near to Mount Zion and the city of the living God.
From the letter to the Hebrews
Brothers and sisters,
Consider where ye stand:
ye are not come near to a palpable mountain and a blazing fire,
with darkness, thunderclouds and stormy winds,
where the trumpet sounded and the voice spoke the words,
and those who heard her
begged that she would speak to them no longer.
And what they saw was so terrible that Moses exclaimed :
‘I tremble with fear.’
Nay,
thou art consorted with Mount Zion and the city of the living God,
the heavenly Jerusalem and the thousand angels,
the festive and solemn assembly of the firstborn
who are enrolled in heaven,
ye are gathered unto God, the judge of all,
and to the spirits of the righteous
Who have attained perfection,
unto Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant,
whose shed blood calls forth something better than the blood of Abel.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 48(47), 2-3a, 3b-4, 9, 10-11
We celebrate your goodness, God,
here within your temple walls.
Great is the Lord, He be highly praised
in our God’s city of Jerusalem.
His holy mountain rises brilliantly there,
a joy to every one on earth.
To us Zion is the Mount of the Gods,
the city of the great King.
God Himself, who resides within its fortresses,
He shows Himself a secure fortress.
All that we have heard we now see for ourselves
in our God’s city of Jerusalem.
The city of the Lord of the heavenly armies,
God upholds her forever.
We celebrate your goodness, God,
here within your temple walls.
As far as your Name reaches, your glory also reaches
to the borders of the earth.
Beneficial is all that comes from your hand.
ALLELUIA John 10, 27
Alleluia.
My sheep listen to My voice , says the Lord ;
and I know them and they follow Me,
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mk. 6, 7-13
Jesus began sending out the 12 two by two.
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ follow
Mark
At that time
Jesus called the twelve to himself
and began to send them out two by two.
He gave them power over the unclean spirits
and forbade them
to carry anything for the journey other than just a stick :
no food, no travelling bag, no copper money in their belts.
‘Well may you wear sandals ,
but do not put on double clothing.’
He further said :
‘If you enter a house somewhere ,
stay there until you leave again.
‘And if there is a place where you are not received
and does not listen to you,
leave there
and shake the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.’
They left to preach repentance.
They drove out many devils,
anointed many sick with oil and healed them.

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
181. All obligations arising from the social teaching of the Church
‘arise from love, which – in the words of Jesus – is the summary
of all the law (cf. Mat 22:36-40).168 This requires recognising
that ‘the love that is full of small gestures of mutual love also touches the
civil and political life and is expressed in all actions
to build a better world’. For this reason, love does not
expressed only in intimate and close relationships, but also in ‘macro relationships:
social, economic, political relations’.
