Fifth sunday through the year

Nieuwe afbeelding voor gewone dagen

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Opening word

Today we interrupt our ordinary business
to sail into the deep with Simon Peter.
We lay aside all the busyness
to listen to a deeper message.
We open ourselves completely
to words in which we know God is near
and in which we discern our vocation.
Let us pray that this Eucharist gives depth to our lives
and give us the courage not to give in to doubt or fear.
Let us open our hearts and minds
to greet the Lord in his mercy.

FIRST READING                   Isaiah 6, 1-2a.3-8

From the prophet Isaiah

In the dying year of King Uzziahu, I saw the Lord,
seated on a high and lofty throne:
His tow covered all the floor of the temple.
He was surrounded with seraphs – each had six wings –
and they were calling out to each other:
‘Holy, holy, holy, the Lord of heavenly powers!
‘All the earth is full of his glory!’
The loud shouting made the thresholds shake at their seams
and the sanctuary was full of smoke.
Then I cried, ‘Woe is me, I am lost!
‘For I am a man with unclean lips
and I dwell in the midst of a people with unclean lips,
and yet my eyes have seen the King,
the Lord of heavenly powers, seen!’
But one of the seraphs flew towards me with a glowing coal
which he had taken from the altar with tongs;
he touched my mouth with it and spoke:
‘Now that this has touched your lips, your sins are gone,
your transgressions forgiven.’
Thereupon I heard the Lord speak:
‘Whom should I send?
‘Who shall go before us?’
And I answered:
‘Here I am, send Me!’

Responsorial                 Ps 138(137), 1-2a, 2bc-3, 4-5, 7c-8

Refrain

In the midst of the angels I sing to You, O Lord.

Thee will I praise, Lord, from all my heart,
because You have listened to my prayers.
Amidst the angels I sing to Thee
And cast me down, bowed down to Your temple.
You I praise for Your goodness and Your faithfulness,
for beyond thy fame thou hast kept word.
Hear me every day that I call upon Thee,
then Thou givest me new strength.
Thee shall all the kings of the earth praise
When they hear what Thou hast said.
The deeds of the Lord they will praise,
For unparalleled is the glory of the Lord.
Always thy outstretched hand is my salvation.
The Lord accomplishes for me all that I undertake.
Your goodness, Lord, endures without end:
Do not forget the making of your hands.

SECOND READING               I Cor. 15:1-11
Thus we proclaim, and this ye have believed.

From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the Christians
of Corinth

Brothers and sisters,

I call your attention to the gospel which I have preached to you,
which ye have received,
upon which you are founded
and by which also ye are saved :
In what words did I preach it to you?
I take it that ye have remembered them ;
otherwise you would have accepted faith without a second thought.
In the first place, then, I have handed down to you
what I myself also received as tradition,
namely, that Christ died for our sins,
according to the Scriptures
and that He was buried
and that He rose again on the third day,
according to the scriptures,
and that He appeared to Cephas and then to the Twelve.
Then He appeared
to more than five hundred brethren at once,
most of whom are still alive,
though some have died.
Next, He appeared to James,
then to the apostles.
And last of all, He also appeared to me,
the miscreant.
Yes, I am the least of the apostles,
not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted God’s church.
But by the grace of God I am what I am
and his grace to me has not been in vain.
I have worked harder than all others,
not me, but the grace of God with me.
But whether they are or I am,
that is what we proclaim and that is what you have believed.

Verse for the gospel          Mt 4, 19

Alleluia.
Come, follow me, says the Lord,|I will make you fishers of men.
Alleluia

GOSPEL                      Lk 5, 1-11
They left everything behind to follow Him.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke

On a certain day
Jesus stood on the shore of the Lake of Gennesaret,
while the people were urging Him
to hear the word of God.
He now saw two boats lying on the shore of the lake ;
the fishermen had gone out and washed their nets.
He got into one of the boats, Simon’s
and asked him to go a little way off shore.
He sat down
and from the boat He continued His teaching to the people.
When He had finished His speech, He said to Simon :
‘Now sail to the deep
and cast out your nets for the catch.’
Simon replied :
‘Master ,
all night we toiled without catching anything ;
but at your word I will cast out the nets.’
They did so and caught such a mass of fish in their nets
that these threatened to rip.
So they beckoned to their mate in the other boat
to come and help them.
When they had come
they filled both boats to the brim.
On seeing this, Simon Peter fell at Jesus’ feet and said :
‘Lord, depart from me
for I am a sinful man.’
Dismay had taken hold of him
and of all who were with him,
because of the catch they had made.
So it also happened to James and John, the sons of Zebedee,
who were working with Simon.
Jesus, however, spoke to Simon :
‘Do not be afraid ,
from now on you will catch people.’
They brought the boats ashore
and left everything behind to follow Him.

Fratelli tutti

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCISCUS

On brotherhood and social friendship

184. Love is at the heart of every healthy and open social life. But
today ‘it is easily considered irrelevant to the interpretation and
the orientation of moral responsibilities’. She is
much more than a subjective sentiment, if it is accompanied by a commitment
commitment to truth, so that it does not easily ‘fall prey to casual
emotions and opinions of individuals’. Precisely its connection to truth
promotes in love its universality and saves it from being
‘being relegated to the limited domain of private relationships’.
Otherwise, it will be ‘excluded from projects and processes concerning
the construction of human development of universal scope,
in the dialogue between knowledge and practice’. Without truth,
emotionality is deprived of a relational and social content. The opening
to truth therefore protects love from a false belief that
‘deprives it of a human and universal scope.
