Consideration
In the first part of Genesis, the writer demodels the cosmos. The sun and moon, the gods worshipped in Babylon, give way to an eternal God who is man’s ally. Behind this world, above this world, is the one God, who conquers chaos, death, darkness and the desert. In the end, God makes man and blesses him. He calls man to serve him, to serve his Creator, to serve his creation. Note: The day on which God completes creation and rests – the seventh day, the Sabbath – is a day that does not really end. It is not written, as with other days, ‘And it was evening and it was morning, the seventh day’. The seventh day is an infinite day, the day that is the harbinger of eternal rest, the eternal light that God has promised.
FIRST READING Gen. 1, 20-2, 4a
Now we are going to make man in our image, like ourselves.
From the book of Genesis
God spoke:
‘The waters shall overflow with animals, and on the earth
birds shall fly in the firmament’.
Then God created the great monstrosities of the sea
and all the animals that swarm in the water,
species after species,
and all the winged animals, kind after kind.
And God saw that it was good.
God blessed them and said
‘Be fruitful and multiply;
populate the waters of the sea ,
and the birds shall become numerous on the earth.
Evening came and morning came;
It was the fifth day.
God spoke:
‘The earth will bring forth all kinds of living creatures:
domestic animals, creeping animals
and all kinds of wild animals’.
And so it happened.
God made wild animals, species after species,
domesticated animals, kind after kind,
and everything that crawls on the ground, species after species.
And God saw that it was good.
God said:
‘Now We are going to make man
as an image of Us, as We;
he will rule over the fish of the sea,
over the birds of the air,
over the domestic animals, over all the wild animals and over all that creeps on the ground.
And over all that creeps on the earth’.
And God created man in his image ;
In the image of God he created him;
Man and woman he created them.
God blessed them and spoke to them:
Be fruitful and multiply;
Populate the earth and subdue it.
Rule over the fish of the sea
over the birds of the air
And over all that creep on the earth.
And God spoke:
‘Hereby I give all the crop that forms seed
on all the soil of the earth ,
and all the fruit-bearing trees that yield seed:
They shall be food to you.
‘But to all the wild beasts ,
to all the birds of the air
and every creeping thing that crawls on the ground
To everything that is animal
I will give them all the green harvest for food’.
And so it happened.
God looked at everything he had made ,
and saw that it was very good.
Evening came and morning came;
That was the sixth day.
So the heavens and the earth were completed,
and everything with which they were equipped.
On the seventh day
God carried out the work he had done
to the end.
He rested on the seventh day
from all the work He had done.
God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it,
for on that day God rested from all the work He had created.
That He had created.
This is the story of the creation
of heaven and earth as they were created.
INTERLUDIUM Psalm 8, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
O Lord, our Lord
How glorious is your name on earth.
When I behold the heavens
The works of art of your fingers
When I see the moon and the stars you have placed there:
Ah, what is man then, that Thou dost behold him,
the son of man, that Thou dost take so much care of him?
No less than an angel hast Thou created him,
Thou hast clothed him with beauty and splendour;
Thou hast subjected all Thy creation to him,
Thou hast laid all things at his feet:
Cattle and sheep everywhere,
the wild beasts in the fields ;
birds in the air and fishes in the sea,
all that swarms in the oceans.
ALLELUIAH John 17:17b, a
Alleluia.
Your word is truth, O Lord,
dedicate us to you in truth.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mk 7:1-13
You forsake the commandment of God
And cling to the wisdom of men.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark
Once the Pharisees were gathered together
and some scribes of Jerusalem met with Jesus
and they saw that some of his disciples were eating with unclean people,
that is, they were eating with unwashed hands
After all, the Pharisees and all Jews do not eat without
without first washing their fingertips,
because they hold to the tradition of the forefathers;
they come from the marketplace,
they do not eat without having cleansed themselves;
There are many other things
to which they adhere by tradition:
Washing copper cups, jugs and plates.
Therefore, the Pharisees and Scribes
the Pharisees and Scribes asked him the question:
‘Why do your disciples not behave according to the tradition of their ancestors?
according to the tradition of their ancestors ,
but eat with unclean hands’.
He answered them:
‘How rightly did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites!
‘Surely it is written:
This people honours Me with their lips
but their heart is far from Me.
They honour Me, but without meaning ,
and human laws is what they teach.
‘You forsake the commandment of God
and cling to the wisdom of men:
Wash pitchers and cups
and more such things ye do.
‘It is beautiful.
-he continued,
that ye cast aside the commandment of God
to keep your own customs.
‘After all, Moses said:
Honour thy father and thy mother, and
whoever curses his father or his mother must die.
‘And yet you teach :
If anyone says to his father or his mother :
What I can help you with is Korban.
-which means : sacrifice-.
then you no longer allow him
to do anything for his father or mother.
‘Thus you render the word of God powerless
in favour of your wisdom that you pass on.
‘And you do more such things.’

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
The activity of political love
186. There is such a thing as ‘aroused’ love; these are acts that
arise directly from the virtue of love and are directed towards individuals
and peoples. Then there is ‘compulsory’ love: those acts of love that create
healthier institutions, more just norms, more just structures,
more inclusive structures’. It follows that ‘an equally indispensable act of love
is the commitment to organise and order society so that
our neighbour does not end up in misery’.
It is love to be with someone who is suffering, and it
is also anything anyone does, even without direct contact with that person,
to change the social conditions that cause their suffering.
When someone helps an old man cross a river – and that is exceptional love – the politician builds
a bridge for him, and that is also love.
When someone helps someone else by feeding him, the politician creates a job for him.
The politician creates a job for him and practices a supreme form of love that ennobles his political activity.
