Opening word
As Jesus addressed his disciples ,
so He is addressing us today.
He has a distinct message for us,
which we may not immediately expect:
those who are poor, hungry,
weep and be hated, He praises blissfully.
He promises them a future in joy and happiness.
His standards and norms are those of the Kingdom of God,
they surprise us again and again.
Let us question ourselves by his message
and align our own views
ever more in tune with His.
FIRST READING Jer. 17, 5-8
Cursed is he who trusts in men; blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.
From the prophet Jeremiah
This is what the Lord says:
‘Cursed is he who trusts in men,
who builds on a creature
and turns away from the Lord.
‘He is a barren bush in the steppe,
never does he see rain;
he stands in barren desert soil,
in a barren land,
where no one dwells.
‘Blessed is he who trusts in the Lord ,
and knows himself safe with him.
‘He is like a tree standing by the river
and has roots down to the water.
‘He does not suffer from the heat,
his leaves remain green.
‘Comes a time of drought, it does not bother him;
always he continues to bear fruit.’
Responsorial Ps 1, 1ac and 2, 3, 4 and 6
Entrebillo
Happy is the man who puts his hope in the Lord.
Happy is the man who refuses to do
What wicked men counsel him;
Who goeth not the ways of sinners,
But who finds his happiness in the Lord’s law,
Contemplating it day and night.
He is like a tree, planted by water,
which bears fruit in its time;
In summer his leaves do not wither,
But all that he does brings him prosperity.
The wicked do not fare so:
the wind blows them away like chaff.
For the Lord knows the way of the pious.
The way of sinners is a dead end.
SECOND READING 1 Cor. 15:12,16-20
If Christ is not risen, your faith is worthless.
From the holy apostle Paul’s first letter to the Christians of Corinth
Brothers and sisters,
If we proclaim that Christ has been raised from the dead,
how then can some of you claim
that there is no resurrection of the dead?
For if the dead are not resurrected, neither is Christ risen,
and if Christ is not risen
your faith is worthless and ye are still in your sins.
Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost.
If only for this life
put our hope in Christ,
we are the most wretched of all men.
But it is not like that!
Christ was raised from the dead
as the firstfruits of those who slept.
Verse for the Gospel Lk. 6, 23ab
Alleluia.
Jump up for joy,
for great is your reward in heaven.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Lk. 6, 17.20-26
Blessed are the poor, woe to you rich.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke
At that time, Jesus descended the mountain with the 12.
He remained standing on level ground.
There was a numerous group of his disciples there
and a large crowd of people from all over the Jewish land,
from Jerusalem and from the coastal land of Tyre and Sidon.
He now lifted his eyes, looked at his disciples and spoke:
‘Blessed are you who are poor ,
for to you belongs the kingdom of God.
‘Blessed who are now hungry ,
for ye shall be filled.
‘Blessed who weep now ,
for ye shall laugh.
‘Blessed art thou
when for the Son of Man’s sake men hate thee,
when they cast you out and taunt you
and banish thy name from society as something detestable.
‘When that day comes, leap for joy ,
for great is your reward in heaven.
‘In the same way, their forefathers treated the prophets.
‘But woe to you, rich ones,
for that which comforteth thee, thou hast already received.
‘Woe to you who are now satiated,
for ye shall hunger.
‘Woe unto thee that laugh now,
for thou shalt complain and weep.
‘Woe unto thee, when all men speak of thee with praise,
for their forefathers did the same to the false prophets.’

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
191. As we see that every kind of fundamentalist
intolerance harms relations between individuals, groups and peoples, let us
endeavour to live and teach the value of respect,
a love capable of welcoming all differences, the primacy of
the dignity of every human being above all his ideas, feelings, practices
and even his sins. While in today’s society fanaticism, closed
logic and social and cultural fragmentation are on the rise, a good
politician takes the first step to let the different voices resonate.
While it is true that differences cause conflict, uniformity causes
suffocation and causes us to go down culturally. Let
we not resign ourselves to living locked in a fragment of reality.
