Consideration
God regretted making man. We find people even today who are convinced that things cannot go on like this; that sin and evil have come to such a climax that there is no way out. Expressions like: ‘everything is breaking down’; ‘what kind of a world are we living in?’, etc …have been heard by every one of us. In fact, these are expressions of every age. The story of Noah too paints such a situation and puts God’s thoughts into the mouths of such people. ‘Restarting everything from scratch.’ It is a recurring illusion. Except perhaps for ourselves? Is restarting ever in vain?
FIRST READING Gen. 6, 5-8 ; 7, 1-5.10
I am going to wipe out man, whom I created, from the face of the earth.
From the Book of Genesis
When God the Lord saw how on the earth
the wickedness of men had increased
and how much the lust of their hearts
went out to evil all day long,
He became sorry that He had made man on the earth,
and He was very sad about it.
And God said :
‘I am going to wipe man, whom I created ,
wipe out from the face of the earth,
both man and cattle
and the creeping animals and the birds of the air ,
for I am sorry that I made them.’
Only Noah found mercy in the eyes of the Lord.
God the Lord said to Noah :
‘Go into the ark which thou hast made ,
thou with all thy family,
for of this generation thou art the only one
who is righteous in my sight.
‘Take of all the clean animals seven pairs,
one male and one female each;
but of the unclean beasts one pair,
each time a male and a female;
Also of the birds of the air seven pairs,
each time a male and a female.
‘So shalt thou maintain their kind
throughout all the earth.
‘For in seven days I will make it rain on the earth,
forty days and forty nights,
and I am going to destroy all that exists,
wipe out from the face of the earth all that I have made.’
And Noah did everything the Lord had commanded him to do.
And on the seventh day
the waters of the flood poured down upon the earth.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 29(28), 1a, 2, 3ac-4, 3b, 9b-10
The Lord blesses his people with peace.
Homage the Lord, all the sons of God,
Hail the Lord for his glory and power.
Homage the Lord for the glory of His Name,
kneel before Him for His holy glory.
The voice of the Lord shouts over the waters,
God’s majesty calls from across the sea.
The voice of the Lord with thundering violence,
the voice of the Lord, awe-inspiring!
The voice of the Lord shakes the crowns of oaks,
defoliates the pride of the forest.
The Lord enthrones above the firmament,
there He sits eternally as King.
ALLELUIA Col 3, 16a, 17c
Alleluia.
The word of Christ
May dwell among you in full riches ;
give thanks to God the Father through Him.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mk. 8, 14-21
Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees
and the leaven of Herod !
From the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Mark
At that time the disciples had forgotten to take bread with them
so they had no more than one loaf with them in the boat.
Then Jesus gave them this warning :
‘Take heed,
beware of the leaven of the Pharisees
and the leaven of Herod!’
They talked about this among themselves :
‘He says this because we have no bread.’
But He noticed it and spoke :
‘What are you discussing among yourselves there?
‘That I said this because you have no bread?
‘Do you still not understand?
‘Is your mind so blind?
‘Have ye eyes? Can ye see nothing?
‘Ye have ears: can ye hear nothing?
‘And dost thou not remember
how many baskets full of lumps thou didst pick up ,
when I broke those five loaves for the five thousand?’
They answered Him :
‘Twelve.’
‘And how many baskets full of loaves didst thou fetch ,
when with those seven for the four thousand?’
And they answered :
‘Seven.’
Thereupon He said to them :
‘Do ye not yet understand?’

On brotherhood and social friendship
More fruitfulness than results
193. In exercising this relentless activity, every politician is
always still a human being. He is called to experience love in his daily
interpersonal relations. He is a person and must realise that ‘the
modern world with its technical perfection tends more and more towards the
satisfaction of human desires, classified and divided
between different services, to rationalise. Less and less is a
human being called by his own name; less and less is this unique being
treated in the world as a person who has his own heart, his
sufferings, problems, joys and family. One will only know his illnesses
know to treat them, his lack of money to provide it for him,
his need for a house to give him shelter, his desire
for diversion and leisure to organise them’. However, ‘the
loving the most unimportant of people as a brother or sister, as if
there was no one else but him or her, is not a waste of time’.
