Consideration
A home, brothers, sisters, a father and a mother, children and fields: one does not just leave it all behind. Nor does Jesus ask us to disdain these precious parts of our lives so that we can give them up more easily. Nor is it that we would feel too little love towards them or be completely detached from our roots. So there must be another reason why the gospel reproduces such crass statements. What Jesus wants to make clear is this: in order to give up such important things, there must still exist something that must be much more important, much greater than everything that is already so precious to us: we will get that back a hundredfold when we choose Jesus.
FIRST READING Sir.35, 1-12
He who keeps the commandments, thereby brings a peace offering.
From the Book of Ecclesiasticus
He who keeps the law brings many sacrifices,
he who keeps the commandments, thereby brings a peace offering;
he who performs a benefaction brings a meat offering,
and he who gives alms brings a thanksgiving offering.
The Lord delights in breaking with wickedness,
and breaking with iniquity is atonement.
However, do not appear before the Lord empty-handed,
for all these things the commandment demands.
The sacrifice of a righteous person makes the altar fat,
and its fragrant aroma comes before the Most High;
the sacrifice of a righteous person is pleasing;
and its memory is not forgotten.
Glorify the Lord with a joyful countenance
and take nothing away from the firstfruits which ye have to give;
in all thy gifts show a joyful countenance,
and sanctify the tithes with joy.
Give to the Most High according to that which He has given you;
Give with a joyful countenance and according to your ability.
INTERLUDIUM Ps 50(49), 5-6, 7-8, 14, 23
He who walks straight paths finds the salvation of God.
Bring here all who are devoted to Me,
Who have ratified My covenant with a sacrifice.
The heavens testify His righteousness :
it is God Himself who judges.
Hear now, my people, what I am about to say to you,
hear, Israel, whereof I accuse thee,
for I am God, your God!
I do not reproach you about sacrifices :
your sacrificial animals I see burning all the time.
Rather bring God the sacrifice of your praise,
fulfil your vows to the Most High.
He who offers sacrifices of praise, honours Me truly,
he who goes straight paths finds the salvation of God.
Alleluia Ps. 27(26), 11
Alleluia.
Show me your way, Lord, in the face of opposition,
lead me along smooth paths.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mk. 10, 28-31
He who follows Me receives the hundredfold,
and in the world to come eternal life.
From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark
At that time Peter took the floor and said to Jesus:
‘Behold, we have given up everything to follow You.’
Jesus replied:
‘Verily, I say unto you:
there is no one who leaves home, brothers, sisters,
mother, father, children or fields
for My sake and for the Good News,
or he receives now, in this time, the hundredfold
of homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields,
be it also accompanied by persecutions,
and in the world to come, eternal life.
Many firsts will be lasts
and many lasts firsts.’

Fratelli tutti
Encyclical of
POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and social friendship
207. Is it possible to pay attention to the truth, to seek the truth
that corresponds to our deepest reality? What is the law
without the conviction, arrived at along a long road of
reflection and wisdom, that every human being is sacred and inviolable?
For a society to have a future, it is imperative that it has developed a
deep respect for the truth of human dignity,
to which we submit. Then one will not refrain from
killing someone just to avoid social condemnation and legal punishment,
but out of conviction. It is an indispensable truth that
we acknowledge with reason and accept with conscience. A society
is also noble and venerable because it promotes the search for truth
and its attachment to fundamental truths is cultivated.
