May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Consideration
The word ‘merciful’ links first reading, response psalm and gospel. This must have been particularly comforting for penitents in the ancient Church. They see their lives reflected in the history of ancient Israel. Even after their exile, return to the bosom of the Church awaits. Every believer can pray the answering psalm with deep conviction.
FIRST READING Dan. 9, 4b-10
We have sinned and done evil.
From the Prophet Daniel
O Lord, great and formidable God, who keeps the covenant and is full of mercy
For those who love You and fulfil Your commandments :
We have sinned and done evil ,
we have acted wickedly and been rebellious,
we have departed from thy commandments and laws ;
we have not listened to your servants, the prophets,
who spoke in your name to our kings,
dignitaries, heads of families
and to all the seated people of the land.
Lord, thou art in thy right,
but we have reason to be ashamed
and we too are now ashamed,
we, the men of Judah,
the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel,
both those who dwell near and far
in the lands whither thou hast cast them out,
because they have become unfaithful to Thee.
Lord, we should be ashamed, we, our kings,
our dignitaries and our heads of families,
because we have sinned against Thee.
May the Lord our God be merciful and forgiving,
for we have been rebellious against Him
and we have not listened to the Lord our God
and have not lived by the commandments He has given us
through his servants, the prophets.

Let us not atone for past sins,
meet us with your mercy,

POPE FRANCISCUS
On brotherhood and socio-political friendship
220. The indigenous peoples, for example, are not against progress,
even though they have a different idea of progress that is much more humanistic
than that of the modern culture of the developed peoples. It is not a
culture aimed at benefiting those who have power, those who
need to create some kind of paradise on earth.
Intolerance and contempt for indigenous peoples’ cultures is a genuine form
of violence, peculiar to the ‘so-called ethicists’ without goodness who live
of judging others. But no authentic, profound
and stable change is possible if it is not achieved
starting from the different cultures, especially the poor.
A cultural pact presupposes refraining from understanding the identity of a place
monolithic understanding and requires respecting diversity by
providing it with opportunities for development and social integration.
