Invitation
May I ask for your attention for
daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation is to share the joy
of the gospel with you. Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their heart
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day.
Consideration
The Jewish expression ‘Law and Prophets’ refers to the entire Old Testament. When Jews speak of the Law (the Torah), they generally mean the five books of Moses (the Pentateuch); for Jews, the section of Scripture called ‘Prophets’ includes not only the books named after prophets, but also the historical books in which prophets appear. It is clear that Jesus could not possibly claim that his message would go against the deep meaning of the Old Testament.
FIRST READING Deut. 4, 1.5-9
Act according to the Lord’s decrees, and observe them with care.
From the Book of Deuteronomy
In those days Moses spoke to the people:
‘Listen then, O Israel,
to the statutes and ordinances which I teach you,
and follow them.
‘Then you will live and take possession of the land
which the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you.
’I have now taught you statutes and ordinances
as the Lord your God commanded me.
‘Observe them carefully in the land that you are about to enter
and be very careful to do them,
for in this way the nations
will learn to know your wisdom and your understanding.
‘When they hear all these statutes they will say,
This great nation is a wise and understanding people.
’Is there any other nation so great,
whose gods are so near to them
as the Lord our God is near to us, so often as we call upon him?
‘Or is there any other great nation
that has such perfect statutes and rules
as the law I am giving you today?
’Be careful, then, and keep
what you have seen with your own eyes,
“so that you do not forget it
and pass it on to your children and grandchildren.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 147:12-13, 15-16, 19-20
Praise the Lord, Jerusalem!
Praise the Lord, Jerusalem,
Sion, glorify your God!
For he has firmly bolted your gates,
your sons blessed within your walls.
He sends his command to the earth
and his word hastens forth.
He causes the snow to fall like wool,
and scatters frost like ashes. He sent to Jacob his word,
his law and commandment for Israel.
Never was there a people that he favoured as much,
no other does He make His ways known to.
VERSE FOR THE GOSPEL cf. Lk. 8:15
Blessed are those who hear the word they hear
and keep it in a good and noble heart
and bear fruit through their steadfastness.
GOSPEL Mt. 5:17-19
Whoever keeps and teaches the precepts will be considered great.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew
At that time Jesus said to his disciples:
‘Do not think that I have come
to abolish the Law or the Prophets
but to fulfil them.
’For truly I say to you:
Before heaven and earth pass away,
than that one iota or tittle of the law
will pass away before everything has happened.
“Therefore, whoever takes away one of the least of these commandments
and teaches men so
will be called least in the kingdom of heaven;
but whoever does them and teaches them
will be considered great in the Kingdom of Heaven.’ ________________________________________________________
Fratelli tutti
Encyclical of
POPE FRANCIS
On fraternity and social friendship
229. As the bishops of South Africa have taught, reconciliation is achieved
proactively ’by shaping a new society
based on service to others rather than the desire to
to dominate; a society based on sharing with others
what one possesses instead of on the selfish struggle of each individual to
accumulate the greatest possible wealth; a society in which the value of
being together as people is certainly more important than any small group,
whether that be the family, the nation, the ethnic group or the culture’.
The bishops of South Korea have emphasised that authentic
peace “can only be achieved if we fight for justice through dialogue and
strive for reconciliation and mutual development”.
