Invitation
May I ask for your attention for
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation is to share the joy
of the gospel with you. Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their heart
to the healing power of God’s word.
Available every day.
Consideration
‘[…] a blasphemy: That You, a human, make Yourself God.’ This is clearly an element in the trial of Jesus. Matthew and Mark also have the scene in which the high priest tears his robe, saying ’What need have we of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy for yourselves. Since the fourth gospel strongly emphasises the divine dignity of Jesus, the rejection is also more sharply expressed. At the same time, the emphasis is on the blindness and stubbornness of those who see the works and yet do not believe.
FIRST READING Jer. 20:10-13
From the Prophet Jeremiah
I hear many whispering:
‘There is trouble – everywhere.‘
Apply it to him, yes, we will apply it to him.
All my friends are out to do me
nothing but harm.
They say,
’Perhaps he will be deceived,
then we will overpower him
and take our revenge on him.”
The Lord God is with me like a mighty warrior.
My pursuers will fall; they will not prevail.
They will be greatly ashamed, for they will not succeed.
Their dishonour will last forever; they will never be forgotten!
God of the heavenly hosts,
who justly searches all things,
who alone knows every heart and mind,
show me how you will take vengeance on them.
After all, I have placed my cause in your hands.
Sing a song, a song of praise to the Lord your God,
for He has saved the life of the poor
from the power of the evildoers.
INTERLUDIUM Ps. 18(17), 2-3a, 3bc-4, 5-6, 7
I turned to the Lord in my distress,
His ear caught my cries of distress.
Lord, I love you, you are my strength,
my refuge, my fortress, my deliverer.
My God, the rock where I take refuge.
My shield, my salvation, my protection.
When I call upon the Lord, He be praised,
no enemy shall assail me. For waves of death surrounded me,
a torrent of evil made me afraid.
The net of the underworld had me trapped,
the snare of death was already around me.
Then I turned to the Lord in my distress
and called on my God for help.
He heard my voice in his lofty palace,
his ear caught my cries for help.
VERSE FOR THE GOSPEL Luke 15:18
I am going back to my father
and I will say to him:
Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
GOSPEL John 10:31-42
The Jews tried to seize Jesus again,
but He placed himself beyond their reach.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John
At that time the Jews picked up stones to stone Jesus.
But Jesus said to them:
“I have done many good works before you
which come from the Father;
for which of these works do you want to stone me?‘
The Jews answered him:
’It is not for a good work that we are stoning you
but for blasphemy:
that you, a human being, make yourself God.‘
Jesus answered them:
’Is it not written in your law:
I said, you are gods?
‘She has called them to whom the word of God was addressed gods,
and the Scriptures have binding force.
‘But why then do you accuse Me,
who was sanctified and sent into the world by the Father,
of blasphemy if I call Myself God’s Son?
’If I do not do the works of my Father,
you have no reason to believe Me,
but if I do those works,
then believe the works if you do not want to believe Me.
‘Then you will realise and recognise
that the Father is in Me and I am in the Father.’
Then they tried again to seize Him,
but He placed Himself beyond their reach.
He went back across the Jordan,
to the place where John had first baptised
and stayed there.
Many came to him, because they said:
“Although John performed no sign,
yet everything John said about this man was true.’
And many began to believe in him.

Encyclical of
POPE FRANCIS
On fraternity and social friendship
245. I have often suggested a ‘principle’ which is ‘indispensable for
building social friendship: unity before conflict. […]
This does not mean aiming at syncretism, nor the absorption of
one into the other, but on a solution at a higher level that
preserves the valuable possibilities of the contrasting polarities within itself.
We know full well that ‘whenever we as individuals and
communities learn to aim higher than ourselves and our private
interests, mutual understanding and mutual commitment transform […] an
environment in which conflicts and tensions, as well as people who in the
past may have considered themselves opponents, can come together in a
diverse unity that brings forth new life.”
