White Thursday

Commemoration of the Last Supper of Christ with his apostles and the institution of the Eucharist.

Invitation

May I ask for your attention for
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation is to share the joy
of the gospel. Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their heart
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day

Opening words
This evening we commemorate Jesus
as he sat down to eat with his apostles for the last time.
With a look of wonder
we see how our Lord and Teacher bends down
and washes the feet of his disciples.
He summarises his entire life in the simple signs
of broken bread and shared wine.
To serve, to break and to share:
this is how we follow Him and bring Him to our presence.

FIRST READING               Ex. 12:1-8, 11-14
Instructions for eating the Passover lamb.

From the Book of Exodus

In those days the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron
in Egypt and said: ‘Consider this month as the first month,
as the first month of the year.
’Make the following known to the whole community of Israel: ‘On the tenth of this month
each family must choose a lamb,
each house a lamb.
’If a family is too small for a lamb, then they must,
taking into account the number of people,
do so together with their closest neighbour.
‘When distributing the lamb,
everyone’s appetite must be taken into account.
’The lamb must be unblemished,
male and one year old.
‘You can take a sheep or a goat.
’You must keep the animals
until the fourteenth of the month.
‘Then the whole community of Israel must
slaughter them at twilight.
‘Then you must take some of the blood and smear it
on both doorposts and the upper beam of the door
of all the houses where the lamb is to be eaten.
’The meat must be eaten on the same night,
roasted on the fire.
‘It must be eaten with unleavened bread
and bitter herbs.
’And this is how you must eat the lamb:
Girded across your loins, your feet shod
and your staff in your hand.
‘You must eat it hastily
for it is the Lord’s Passover.
’I will pass through Egypt on this night
and I will smite all the firstborn in Egypt, both man and beast
‘I will execute judgment on all the gods of Egypt
’But the blood on the houses shall be a si
‘that ye have lived there.
’When I see the blood on your houses,
I will pass over you
‘No destructive plague shall touch you when I strike Egypt.
‘This day you are to make a memorial of it,
a festival to honour the Lord.
’You are to keep it from generation to generation
as an eternal ordinance.’

Response Psalm             116 (115): 12-13, 15-16bc, 17-18
Refrain
The cup of blessing communicates with the blood of Christ.

How can I express my gratitude
for all that the Lord has given me?
I will take the cup of salvation,
calling on the name of the Lord.

For precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his faithful ones.
O Lord, I am your servant,
you have loosed my bonds.

I will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to you,
calling on the name of the Lord.
I will fulfil my vows
before all his people.

SECOND READING              1 Cor. 11:23-26
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death.

From the first letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of
Corinth

Brothers and sisters, I myself received from the Lord the tradition
which I passed on to you:
That the Lord Jesus
on the night he was betrayed
took bread,
and after giving thanks he broke it
and said,
‘This is my body which is for you.
’Do this in remembrance of me.‘
In the same way, after the meal he took the cup
and said,
’This cup is the new covenant in my blood.
“Do this
each time you drink it,
in remembrance of me.’ Each time you eat this bread and drink the cup,
you proclaim the Lord’s death
until he comes again.

Verse before the gospel             John 13:34

Praise and honour be to you, Lord Jesus.
A new commandment I give to you, says the Lord,
that you love one another, just as I have loved you.
Praise and honour to you, Lord Jesus.

GOSPEL              JOHN 13:1-15
He showed his love for us to the very end.

From the holy gospel according to
John

The Passover was near.
Jesus,
knowing that the time had come
to pass from this world to the Father,
and who had loved his own in the world,
gave them a proof of his love to the end. During the meal,
when the devil had already
inspired Judas Iscariot, son of Simon,
with the plan to hand him over,
Jesus got up from the table.
In the awareness
that the Father had put all things into his hands
and that he had come from God
and was returning to God,
he took off his outer clothing,
and wrapped a towel around his waist.
Then he poured water into a basin
and began to wash the disciples’ feet
and dried them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter
who said to him, ‘
Lord, do you want to wash my feet?’
Jesus answered, ‘
What I am doing, you do not understand now
but you will know after this.’
Peter said to him,
‘Never in all eternity will you wash my feet!‘
Jesus answered him:
’If you do not let me wash you,
you cannot be my disciple.‘
Then Simon Peter said to him:
’Lord, then not only my feet
but also my hands and head.”
But Jesus replied:
‘Whoever has taken a bath does not need to wash
except for the feet,
for he is completely clean.
‘You are clean too,
although not all of you.’
For he knew who would betray him.
That is why he said,
‘Not all of you are clean.’ When he had washed their feet,
put on his outer garments
and had returned to the table,
he said to them:
‘Do you realise what I have done to you?
’You address me as Teacher and Lord,
and rightly so, for that is what I am.
“But if I,
the Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet,
then you also should wash each other’s feet.
‘I have given you an example
that you may do as I have done for you.”

Fratelli tutti

Encyclical of

POPE FRANCIS

On fraternity and social friendship

251. Those who truly forgive do not forget, yet they choose to let
go of the destructive power that caused so much evil.
done. They break a vicious circle, curbing the advance of the
devastating forces. They decide not to continue injecting
society with the energy of revenge, which sooner or later
will eventually rebound on them. After all, revenge
never truly satisfy the victims’ dissatisfaction. There are crimes so
horrific and cruel that it is useless to make the person who
committed them suffer to experience that the crime has been made up for
; neither would it be sufficient to kill the criminal, nor could one
find tortures that outweigh the suffering that the victim
had to endure. Revenge solves nothing.
